While I have used a shotgun [12 ga] on grouse in the distant past, I now use the 22 rimfire almost exclusively. I take head shots whenever possible, but have been known to drill 'em through the upper body at longer ranges. I am working on adapters to shoot pistol ammo in my regular hunting rifle If accuracy is acceptable, I will be packing some of that stuff this fall. Regards, Eagleye.

if the chickens in the air, the 410 is a $hitty choice, compared to a 20 or 12 gauge

on the ground, might as well use a 22 :)

I hardley ever shoot any in the air so it's not a big concern for me. I hunt them in the bush and there isnt usually any decent shot if they fly so I dont worry about it. The chickens are everywhere so i dont take the ones that fly unless they give a really nice presentation. only ever hapened once where I got em outa the air.

I hate pellets in my meat (dental work is too expensive) so I use a my .22 sillouette rifle! Oh and I like to soak the breasts in red wine before I cook them. Boy do I love those birds! Sooo good!

five pages without a pic of the bird:eek:

I don't solely go for grouses, so I prefer 12g with #8 and rifled slugs in different pockets...:)

One day while cutting firewood (on hunting trip) a friend threw all three of his knives at it (not very good care for his blades), but he did manage to cut the neck of the bird on the third one, could not believe it!!!

.22 the way to go.

How to go blammo on chickens!!!!

Baikal 12 ga SXS, 18" bbls with cheapo, light Wal-Mart loads for Grouse or a
Ruger 10/22 with red dot scope on ptarmichickens since they're on the ground in all that snow. The red dot shows up real nice on that little white head.
I slingshot them too but I miss a lot more than I hit since I ain't no Elly May Clampett!!! (Some of you younger bucks may have no idea who that is!)

i used a crosman 2240 heavily modified it is .22 cal and shoots just over 900 fps its quite and powerful enough to quickly dispatch them....ive only gone once tho when i go again it is sure to be at least my side arm if not my main gun
