Yeah, and when it gets broken into & your guns stolen you'll be charged with "unsafe transportation"....
I transport my handguns in whatever is handy as long as it is lockable and very securely lockable (i.e. hard to pry open). I transport with a combo trigger or action lock on them as well. And lastly, call me crazy, but I visit Harbour Freight in Buffalo every time I am down there and they usually seem to have a sale on their home brand of combo safes. I wouldn't store the queen's jewels in them, but they add one more layer of 'gotta get thru' to get to my guns. So I have TWO small safes bolted into the back of my van. Great for storing the GPS, etc., overnight when not carrying guns, but when carrying handguns I put the guns in one and the ammo in another. If they charge me with unsafe storage I know I will beat the rap as I defy them to show me a safer means of transport. And on top of that, I don't have to worry about transport interstate as I know they are well and truly locked up. Sure it takes me two minutes to unpack them, but so what? If I am stopping for the night I can even leave them in the car overnight without too much worry; although I do n't do that... I remove the lockable case from the safe and take it in with me.
And BTW, I buy gun cases that do not SCREAM "guns in here" when buying a case.
When transporting a long gun or two I overkill as well with a trigger lock or action lock or I remove the bolt and lock it up seperately. I chain the case to the rear seat of the car with one of those special 'Krypton" wire locks that takes a torch to open. Granted the thief could also take the back seat of the car but at that point have I met the standard for "safe storage"? I would simply ask what I could do to transport in a safer manner... I don't believe short of a perimeter that is hardened (i.e. a Brinks armoured van) there is anything safer.
Spend the few bucks. Transport with peace of mind. At least that's my humble opinion and that's what I do. The LEO's that I have discussed this with in the states shake their heads and smile. Most of their stops simple toss the gun into the trunk. No locks. No lockable case. A plastic fishing tackle box and oily rag is the norm it seems. While smiling - they applaud me on the level of safety. It is going to be awfully tough for some kid to wreak havoc with a gun that they have stolen from me as they will have a heck of a time stealing the gun, have to spend additional time locating and stealing the magazine(s) and have to find ammo for the gun (not tough to do on the street I am told). And I travel with complete peace of mind.
My home setup is similar except the safe is a half ton and the home has a ULC alarm system and a dog.
I sleep well knowing that on inspection at any time of the day or night I have my guns stored as safely as they can be..... yet accessible.
