what do YOU use?

Savage 12FV in 22-250. Can't say I have shot anything with it yet, though. Got it over winter and just got reloading supplies in to work up some loads. It hasn't liked Winchester white box 45gr. or Federal 55gr. so far.

Where you are and whether or not you plan on keeping the hides has some to do with it. A .243 will give you a deer rifle as well as a varmint rifle with a change of bullet.
 
I have a bunch of them, 22 Hornet,204, couple of 223's and a 25-06AI but this is the one that usually gets the nod.

I have custom and semi custom rifles that I use for F-Class shooting. many of these push well past the half-way-to-5-digits mark.

BUT....

For Coyote and Varmint hunting I love my bone-stock unmodified Remington SPS Varmint rifles in 204 Ruger. I even use a relatively austere Mueller scope on it.

They are as accurate as a rifle can be for the stop-em-dead radius of the 204... (500 yards) and they pelts are in great shape if shot 0ver 100 yards.

The wife raises poultry. This is a Coyote dinner bell, and I have had some spectacular kills off the back porch.

The secret to varmint success is speed. You cannot beat a 204, 22-250 or a 220 swift for varmint slaying speed and realistic accuracy.
 
Love my 22-250 but as one other stated a 243, 6mm remington or a 25-06 is a great idea because when deer season rolls around that rifle will feel like an extension of your hand.
 
just ordered a new barrel for my savage model 11 in 22-250 ackley improved
26 inch barrel and either a 1-9 or a 1-7 twist.cant remember.
looking foreward to dustin some varmints!yooohoooo!!!
 
204 Ruger, I have had three, Rem VSSF II, XR-100 and my Tikka Super Varmint I am selling. They were and are super accurate and just drop coyotes, I will shoot more rounds in a day at gophers, than I ever will at Coyotes so it is dual purpose, with out the extra cost ammo, powder, and recoil like some other cartridges.
That being said I have a had quite few 223s, that are also great,, the one good thing about buying guns or selecting a caliber, you are never stuck with it, you can buy and sell and pick the one for you.
 
CZ527 223 with a Nikon Monarch 6-16x. Still working up loads but got some good ones already. Little bugger sure is cheap to load for.
 
I have two varmint rifles, one is a Sako Vixen heavy barrel .222, and the other is a Remington 700 SPS .22-250 with a sporter weight barrel. I like the .22-250 for coyotes as it's lighter for walking and has more punch at long range, and the .222 for gophers and such. There is no noticble recoil and I can watch the impact through the scope.
