What do you want to see in a new stock

Hey guys

I have substantial roots in TR shooting and may be starting production of an all new stock manufacturing business. What does the ideal stock include for you personally?

Thanks

I think the best all around design centers around the hunting-style stocks. They allow the shooter the most flexibility to use at the bench or in the field. The M40A1-type stocks from McMillan and Manners are probably the best examples of this, but they don't offer the same level of adjustability as a true benchrest or tactical stock. If you can come up with a design that is similar with an adjustable butt and a cheekpiece that's not the saddle-type I think you'll have a winner. Oh, and a price comparable or below that of the most common stock out there would get you some business. Stock prices are getting a little crazy, especially if you have to order from the US. I'd be happy paying 400 and up. A grand for a custom stock is getting ridiculous and that deosn't include inletting or bedding!

Good input. I am considering a price point of about 400-600$ model and material dependent. Initial products will not be inlet until machines can be acquired.

I have big hands, so I like a lot of meat in the grip. I like a rear hook and a wide (tactical wide, not BR wide) fore end.

Manners T4 is nice, T5 is the most comfortable stock I've ever shouldered.

I am in discussion with another member here for inletting. To have a bolt up stock at the quality I am aiming for would be difficult as every rifle action is slightly different. Obviously an inlet and bolt hole pattern could be developed for a shootable fit, but should really be bedded too. These are tasks well suited for any local gunsmith. We are talking a quality of fitting way beyond any polymer or mass produced stock available.

I am not excluding the idea of doing everything in house. That will come in time.

Personally I like the Remington XR100 thumbhole stock which is a boyd Ross thumbhole if I am not mistaken. I would like to see a straightened flat rear bottom and a little more meat on the forearm but the basic shape is very sound for me.

I was the stock layup, finishing, and hardware installer guy at Robertson. These stocks will be built similarly but of more modern epoxies, fibers and with a different assembly process. You won't see any Robertson stock designs as they we sold to a gentleman in the USA. I believe Canadians need access to professional level equipment that is available and built here. Importing and exporting from the states is an expensive and time consuming proposition for most.

I'm glad to see a Canadian taking the initiative to get into the stock building business. I much prefer to buy in country than to deal with import/export and currency exchange hassles.

I can understand why you will not do a direct copy of a Robertson design. However, you should consider coming up with a low riding f class stock of your own.

As far as which details would be important to me, I would like to see rails under the fore end similar to the GBF, not just a flat surface. I'd also like to see a lowrider style fore end to keep the centre of gravity as low to the rest as possible.

For a TR thumb hole stock I'd copy an Anschutz 1413, 1813 or 1913 but would narrow the width and depth of the forearm. For a traditional stock I'd copy an Anschutz 1411, 1811 or 1911 and would also narrow the width and depth.

For a high tech TR wood stock look at the Walther Anatomic...

Sorry I don't have any thoughts for f class.

why not give us your name, I asked this before and my post was removed mmmmmm why the secrecy, and give us a little history of your experience and some of your plans, then we can help you refine your process or give you a better sence of direction on how to proceed, Jefferson the J in J T R (used around the world by over a dozen countries that are real benchrest competitors)
