What do you want to see in a new stock

I have ordered a boyds varmint thumbhole stock which I will modify for all around use. The plan is to mill the front end out to look like a robertson gbf stock and the butt will be straightened/ flattened to ride the bag. I am also looking for a cheek riser kit similar to the one used on the savage palma stock so that it'll be comfortable prone and on the bench. Something similar would probably sell....

This is great news I think Canada is in desperate need of a stock maker , I think the market is there.
Good luck we need some Canadian manufacturers cause one day we may get cut off from our neighbors to the south as far as firearms accessories are concerned.

I would like to see a stock that can be all things to all people. Sounds impossible right?

I don’t think so…
The center of the stock would be designed to attach to the rifle action plus an aluminum rail out the back that is purposefully designed to attach a number of butt stock styles (sold separately) and an aluminum rail in the front to attach a variety of forends, (also sold separately) and all of the accessory butt stock and forend components would attach firmly and properly so the user does not feel like he has made any compromise.

This way one gun could be configured to ride a bag and tripod for load development, then switched around for a light weight hunting config, then switched around for tacticool or F-class.

Once a guy buys the stock, he will eventually be calling for additional accessory stock components, and calling and calling and calling…

Only problem is, what would we do with all our guns after that?

From the experience you already have in this industry, I'm sure you know which discipline/sector is more viable, rough demand, and which to perhaps not even bother with unless you export.
I think that's a great start.

As a few posts indicate... it seems to take a long time to make a name in this sport, having your equipment win a few matches seems to help.

Seems stocks with a bedding block already in them, ready for people to swap their gear to is what would get the highest demand. Once people start having to send it out to a gunsmith, add lead time, this and that, I think a fair bit of the market is gone just because of the hassles. I've been playing with ideas of a chassis stock and attachments, and it is a bit of a pain trying to do something that does it all and fits a variety of actions/triggers and so on without having too many compromises.

Best of luck with the project.

I was not planning to reply to this thread but all the McMillanites seem to be out. It is not at all hard to beat the quality of a McMillan stock, I did it for many years. The other great thing about having a stock business in Canada is that you can ship anywhere in the world unlike what the USA gov has done to business owners in the USA.

Savage, I would sure like to see another Canadian BR stock. I know the market is small but when you and the gang at Robertson were producing them it made me HAPPY HAPPY. Would love to get another JTR stylized stock.

FYI to those looking for Canadian-built stocks, Keith Cunningham of MilCun (Ontario) currently makes a custom sniper stock. It's called the TS1 Tactical Sniper Stock. Though I have never used one, I did attend 2 of their Poilice Sniper courses and seen these first hand. They are a well thought-out design for the duty sniper or someone wishing to use a precision rifle for comp and hunting. Downside - a little pricey. Have a look: http://www.milcun.com/pdfs/TS1 Features.pdf

Have thought about it a little, how about making very simple drop ins? Instead of un-inletted stocks, put in a large order for aluminum bedding blocks and build your stocks around that? Will make for a cheap manufacturing process....

I don't think I've seen this up till now, A STOCK FOR HUNTING AND TARGET SHOOTING. For me that would be a stock with a SWITCH OR CHANGEABLE FOREND, narrow for hunting and wide for target shooting, all sorts of variations could be available.
