A Remington 870 Wingmaster top folder in poor cosmetic shape, but perfectly functional and a lot of character from riding in armored cars for a few decades. It's only February and already we've got the deal of the year! :) Thanks to Casey at Tactical Ordnance for this score.

Maybe someone can clear up a question I had. I understand this to be a 2 3/4" receiver and I know the barrel is 2 3/4". I ran some 3" shotshells through the action and it ran fine. If I were to obtain a 3" barrel is it safe to shoot 3" shells through this gun?

Did you run fired 3" shells through the gun? Remember, the nominal length of a shotshell is its fired length.

All 870 receivers are the same; the only difference is the ejector. The 3" ejector sits farther back in the receiver, so that the longer shells can clear the ejection port. Some 870s were built with 2-3/4"-chambered barrels and 3" ejectors and can therefore function with 3" shells with only a barrel swap.

Well, if someone has bought one, and can't stand ugliness of it or have spent money they need otherwise- I would be willing to take it of their hands. :)

The 3" shells will load into the gun, as the chamber is sized with enough space for the 2.75" shotshell to open up into after being fired. But while unfired 3" shell fits, bad things happen when the gun is fired and the shotshell has no space in the chamber to open up into!

Nice find BTW, and probably much better built and with better materials than the currrent crop of 870s....

Thanks guys. I'm familiar with the shell measurements and no, I won't be firing any 3" loads through this 2 3/4" barrel. Thanks for clarifying about the ejector position.

Another related question, do "magnum" receivers differ in any way? Can this receiver take magnum loads? I know the pressures are primarily in the barrel but I figured Remington marks magnum receivers as such for a reason. Thanks all!

Since it could use a refinish anyways you should replace the ejector. There is only one size available today and it will allow you to eject 3 inch shells with a 3 inch barrel. I bought an old used police gun a while back and it had already had the ejector replaced and the two spots where it shows through on the receiver were not blued.

Fantastic deal, wish I'd known about it in time. I'm not sure I'd even refinish it, I'm liking that used and abused look.

Put on a 3" barrel and it may cycle 3" shells fine.

I have a non-magnum Wingmaster which has no troubles cycling 3" shells. I made no changes to it.

By the way, I dont envy your shoulder shooting 3" shells from that gun. Ouch.
