what does a 6.5 creedmore do that a 6.5 x 55 doesn't?

I used a 6.5x55 in F class for a couple of years. After 6000 rounds in had a 6 inch freebore and I had to rebarrel. I went with a 260 Ackley. With Winchester brass the case capacity was almost the same as the Swede.

The Creedmoor is similar to the 260Rem. I don't see why the Creed was required. And neither is as effective as a 260Rem-Ackley.

With the popularity of the 6.5 creedmore these days I an wondering why it seems to be so popular . What does it do that the 6.5 x 55 doesn't do, or what does it do better ? I don't get it .

I load 125 and 140 gr partitions in my 6.5 x 55's and my load books don't show me any advantages in favour of the Creedmore. What am I missing?
Pete

It's popular today because it is the trend. It has happened with all new innovated cartridges when they came onto the market. The latest 6.5 is the 6.5x300 Weatherby, and many jumped on the trendy-wagon and purchased. IMHO, there are only microscopic variances between these two cartridges, not unless someone asks on a gun forum, inreturn, at least 7 pages of nit-pic opinions.

You can’t be serious? Name me another cartridge that has enjoyed the same popularity 10 years after introduction. The list is extremely short.

I think it's funny there is more available data and knowledge on a 10 year old cartridge than the venerable swede.
Besides, I'm not against the popularity of the Creedmoor: it means easier access to 6.5 projectile for my 6.5 SE.

It appeals to the masses. The masses are all off the shelf snipers now. Velcro has taken the place of camo. Long range shooting has superseded hunting. BC's matter more than bullet construction. Hornady hit this with a cool new cartridge, named after a old school range. Marketing is improved. The cartridge isn't...

I can't see one thing wrong with the 6.5 CM design. Couple that with a lot of a lot of ammo support like TB said and it is a very good choice, esp for someone wanting an accurate/efficient deer rifle.
Agreed. Except I bought my first 6.5 CM last winter and have really enjoyed it. 143-147s cheat the wind like few others in its recoil/velocity class.

And 2800fps with a 140 in the 6.5CM is a little on the optimistic side, while 2750 is on the low side for the 308 with 168's.
Hornady factory ammo specs show the 168's at 2840 and 178's at 2775 for 1500+ftlbs at 500m for both.

You obviously haven't loaded for a Creedmoor. With a 24" barrel, a half a dozen different powders will get you 2800 and not at extreme pressure either. Those 308 loads you quoted are the Superformance Match ammo which is loaded hot than standard. The 168 @ 2750 load I quoted is realistic of a 24" 308 with a number of powders.

Microscopic variances between a 6.5 Creed and a 6.5-300 Wby?? One holds double the gun powder of the other...

Who would choose a 6.5x55 over a 6.5CM under the current market and availability circumstances?

Reloader that wants more performance then the 6.5CM can offer? Someone that's been shooting the 6.5x55 for a couple of decades and sees no improvement in changing to the 6.5CM? People that don't like plastic on rifles?

I have a 24" 700 in 6.5 and lots of different powers, none are getting me 2800fps without hitting pressure signs. IMR4831was 2700fps before I hit the wall. I may try H4831 next, but accuracy was quite good with the IMR so I may stick with it.
I use a 7mm Rem Mag for 1000m shooting anyway, with the Thruster brake I have on it, it's like shooting a 243. Part of the reason I got the 6.5CM was to make it HARDER to shoot out 1000...lol

As a reloader, I'd go with a 6.5-06 if I wanted more performance.

I was answering the OP's question, the difference between the 6.5x55 and 6.5 Creedmore, not the Weatherby cartridge.

The 6.5 Creedmoor will get more popular due to the fact that the US military has adopted the round. :)

Most reloading data shows 2600 FPS for a max load of 140gr bullet in 6.5 CM and a 24'' barrel. Even Hornady shows 2700 as max and only one powder can reach 2800FPS. It's a great cartridge but I think people like exaggerate its performance a little bit.

They were just roped in by the marketing...

Just like with the sig 320 and F-35.

I think it's great that we get new cartridges. We had all the same discussions when the RUM cartridges came out and the WSM cartridges. But it gives a handloader like me more to play around with. It's all splitting hairs and we really could get by with just a half dozen or so cartridges but personally I want more and newer stuff because that equates to more sales of firearms and more interest in the sport and more gun owners.
