What does "Express" mean with 870's

Express means it was passed over on the way to the finishing department and left unpolished before bluing and has a birch wood stock and forearm generally, although there are synthetic expresses now. It is the cheap version!! Less finishing = lesser retail price.
I haven't owned a Remington since the "express" came to be........

'Express' is just a marketing term to differentiate the two Model 870s. Magnum means it will accept the longer 3 1/2" magnum shells. It will also chamber 2 3/4" and 3" shells.

The original Remington Model 870 Wingmasters were well made and respected shotguns. Better made than the 'Express Magnums'. I believe they could only chamber 2 3/4" shells.

Magnum does not mean it takes 3.5" shells. Super Magnum does.

oh good grief. What an assortment of wrong answers.
Remington lingo translations:
'Express' is a finish trim level. The crappiest trim level.
'Magnum' means 3"
'Super Magnum' means 3.5" and it's a different receiver. Not all parts interchange with regular 870's

The difference between a 2.75 and 3" receiver is the ejector. Some 2.75" actions will run 3" shells just fine as long as you have a 3" chambered barrel. If the action is not marked 'magnum', just try it with a 3" chambered barrel and if it ejects 3" shells it works. It will work regardless, but if it has the short ejector it may cause 3" shells to hang up on the way out
