Made in 1917 and been to India, ESA ^ mark.

And that, of course, would suggest that the rifle is a deactivated drill rifle with a pin welded through the chamber, and with notches in the stock on each side of the barrel breech. And if the rifle is not a drill rifle, there will likely be patches in the wood where the notches were, and the rifle will most likely be a restocked sported one.
