What does YOUR gun room look like?

Claven, just put down some floor insulation, some carpeting/linoleum, throw up some sheet-rock, and your gun room will look nice and purdy. I'm sure some of us wouldn't mind helping you out if we got to fondle some of the toys. :D

I can swing a hammer. ;)

there was guy selling an Mg42 in the firearms section just last week it might still be there. I used to really enjoy shooting mine when you could especially on the layfette tripod . one day I'll take a pick of my man cave but the lighting sucks as does my camera

Sorry, no hijack intended. How do you guys keep track of the keys for all the trigger locks? I have to go on a fishing expedition every time I want to open a gun up.

Combo locks are expensive, but I use them for anything I'm taking to the range. I have seen more than a few guys show up and have to start asking around to see if anyone has a key that fits their lock, having left theirs' at home! LOL

If your gun room is a true gun room with secure walls and door (without defining what that is) or if it is a vault, then you do not require trigger locks for storage. I would expect that the two large gun rooms displayed must have some pretty secure facilities for a variety of reasons.

I am puzzled how Claven (I think it was) is able to keep his shop so clean and tidy.

Having 24 trigger locks, 3 cable locks, and 11 sets of keys can be a pain (actually 12 keys I use the factory lock system for my 10/22).
My trigger locks are all "master lock" brand. I only buy the 3 packs keyed alike. For each new pack I paint the keys and the locks a color. One new pack I picked up recently had a very close keying so I was able to color code them the same as an earlier lock. I buy these at Canadaian Tire when they come on sale for $18.00 (usually $25.00). Even though my gun/reloading room is locked and all my firearms are in locked cabinets, I still lock all triggers, and cable my lever actions. If there is ever a storage problem I don't want to be one named in a newspaper charged with improper storage.

Then set them all to the same combo and throw away your keys forever...

Claven,

What is the make/model of your mini-mill?

NS

It's a Micromark "Microlux" model that I had imported from the US. A few company's sell the same basic mill in Canada, but the Micro-Mark one comes with imperial leadscrews and an all-steel gear train, so I went the importation route. The Micro-Mark mills are made in China, but modded and assembled in the US. Most other makes are pure chinese.

I like it. Highly recommended unit for the space-constrained metal shop.

No, the Busy Bee model is significantly smaller and uses an MT2 spindle.

Mine is a bit bigger and uses an MT3 spindle, but the same model is available with an R8 spindle, which is what I SHOULD have bought since R8 tooling is cheaper, but I already have some MT3 tooling for my lathe, so no biggie.

Also, mine does not have DRO, I use DTI's instead. The DRO on the Busy Bee model is of dubious value IMHO, as like the compound-slide DRO's on some of the small lathes, it measures revolutions of the control spindles and lead screws, NOT actual distance, so they lose accuracy to backlash. A better solution are bolt-on DRO's as available at machine tool suppliers that actually measure real distance. I don;t have a need for that fieature though.

Also, I think the Busy Bee model might only be a spindle RPM DRO which is of even further limited value IMHO.

Roger that.

I've been eyeing the BB one, but have concerns.

Basically, my Sherline isn't big enough, nor does it have enough oomph for me. I want a "real" machine....but don't have the space for it. So a bench-top is my option. The BB 1976 is too big for my available space (unless I do some destruction...need wifely permission for that)

I've bookmarked the one you have, and will keep an ear to the ground for other options....for now, I'm off to go look at a used formerly school-based Lathe. $600....I don't think I can lose!

NS

Well, all I can say is that I have not regretted importing the Microlux. Even after shipping and duty it is cheaper than the one Princess Auto sells (same basic machine made by the same Chinese factory), but it also comes with a steel gear train, imperial units, more accessories, better fit and finish and less cosmo-goop on it. It is also configured for a bolt-on power cross-feed upgrade available from micro-mark or LMS, while the Princess one is NOT (ie, you would also have to replace the leadscrews and support plates).

FIFTY!?! A "weapons cache" is probably officially defined in the Ryerson Media Dictionary as more than ONE ;)

And anything that EVER served in ANY military in ANY century, including sportered 1890's Long Lee Enfields, is defined as a "military-style assault rifle", unless it has a scope, then it's a "high-powered sniper rifle".

Get with the program PEOPLE!
