I have a 35 WHELEN built on a Savage 111 action with the trophy hunter stock. I has a 22 inch stainless steel semi-bull Shilen barrel. Topped with a Minox ZV3 3-9x 40 it weighs in at 8lbs 2 oz. Points like a dream and handles more like a carbine, not to mention Sub MOA groups from 200-250 grain projectiles.

weighed some more of my rifles today.

interesting.

Winchester 94 375, Williams peep - 6lb 6oz
Remington 700 270, vx2 3x9x50 - 8lb 5oz
tikka t3 308, 3-9x40 burris ff2 - 7lb 1oz
ruger 35w vx2 2-7x33 - 8lb 10oz

My 9.3mm Husky started out at a very reasonable 7 1/4 lbs. The beech stock had a very bad split at the grip, so I replaced it with a gorgeous but very dense and heavy piece of walnut. That pushed the weight up to close on 8 lbs. What really put it over the top was a G&H side mount. That's a really hefty chunk of steel, and the weight shot up to over 9 lbs with a 3x Leupold. If I think of it, I'll put it back on the scales again tonight and find out just what it does weigh.

I don't weigh my rifles... just build what I want, pick it up and go hunting... as a flatlander, weight is on the bottom of my priority list.

However, I can understand the proccupation you mountain folk have with weight though... even still I would be more concerned about loosing the extra 30 pounds on "my" frame, before loosing a few ounces off my rifles frame... there has to be more than one fat guy carrying a skinny rifle.

so true Greg.

Don't think you are going to find a lot of mountain rifle weights in Whelan. Can understand the sentiment if one is sheep hunting, but i would doubt that many use this cal for that.

My larger cal firearms are not light, and i dont think i would want them to be. Having never owned a Whelan, i am going to assume the recoil is between 06 and 338 wm.
