Like the title says im looking for ideas for long range targets / gongsfor use with my 338 edge at 500 yards and over pictures would be cool to

For the 338 I would use something like a bulldozer blade wear plate. Nothing marks it. I welded up the holes and welded a high carbon rod to the back up to pipe hanger. I like the ring to this one too!

And then I have some 2 1/4 inch thick flanges that are 50 cal friendly. Only problem not much sound from hitting it. More of a splat.

These all swing when hit, the last one swings less due to weight!!

We have found a source for some QT 400 plate.. 1/2 inch thick so it should ring real good and will still handle the 338s we are pounding them with... However this is an in progress thing.. I will report how it holds up once we get it set up... 1" mild steel at 300 just gets poked though...

Depends what you can get for free. In AB you should be able to find blind flanges easily

Free is good, but blind flanges and valve body parts are not hard / tough ( exception is the chrome carbide overlay they give valve bodies for abrasion resistant. The will spall chunks off in impact situations

Here is a valve body. You can see how deep the dings are with a 50 cal. 338 Lapua will also put a serious ding. If you can get them for free who cares

If you can't get blind flanges then the best choice is a quenched and tempered wear plate. You want minimum 400 Brinell Hardness

Trade names such as Algotuff / Algoma 400, Algotuff / Algoma 500, Hardox 400, Hardox 500 , AR400 , AR500, QT400, QT500

You need to find a place that will sell of scraps from their burning tables , unless you want to buy a full sheet

remember to hang your gongs from a stand so they can free swing. if u stick them on a dirt hill there is no movement so the gong takes 100% of the bullets energy and your gongs wont last as long. also if you can get any grader blades they are extremely hard.

X2 on the jugs with water. Add some red food color for some extra fun.

We use blind flanges too and they work great. We also tried a disker disk from an old discker seeder and it was too hard. When you weld to it the weld changes the metallurgy and the vibration from the bullet impact just cracks the welds off and it falls down. It sucks when it is 800 yards away and your target disappears.

Well i am in the right business for getting the proper steel because i and a supervisor on a rock crusher we go through haard plate like its going out of style

heat it with a tiger torch till its cherry then weld it and let it cool.

i hadd some 3/8s plate kickin around that i made a few out of. They work great for anything up to a 300 rum. Thats what i shoot. at 500yards it goes right through but makes a hell of a sound.ive got a few dozen of them. Ive had guys shoot at them with the smaller calibers and they love it. lots of GONG sound. the frames also help.

I use .375 AR400 silouettes with swinging vital areas so you can spot your hits. I wish I could get AR500. 400 stands up ok to .308win but anything under 400 yards the .338LM is pretty hard on.
