what dose everyone use for tagrets/Gongs for long range

Here is a few pictures of the one I made, along with an easily dissassembled and very overbuilt frame. The legs are made from 1" solid steel. The crossbar is a massive 1 7/16" I had a heck of a time cutting the plate to size, used an Oxy-Acetylene and then cleaned it up a bit with the grinder. The rectangle plate I welded on another quick link, to allow it to be hung sideways as well.

Please no comments on the prescence of the cobwebs, I havent gotten it out in faaar too long and I am well aware of that! Too much work, not enough play :(

The plate I used is 3/4" thick mild steel. Here is what I found when I torture tested a scrap piece.
200yds with a 7mm REMINGTON MAGNUM. I tried three bullets, 162 A Max, 175 Interlock, 160 Partition, and as expected the 175 Interlock did the most damage. But not much more than the Partition. Looks like about a 1/4 inch deep "splash" was about the worst damage that could be done. On the back side of the plate you could see a circle created by the bullet, and a slight bulge of around 1mm.

Left to right in the photo are: 45 gr 22-250. Interlock, and A-Max.

The left impact is the Interlock, the right is the A-Max

I also shot it once with my 22-250 and 45gr Winchester factory at 4000fps. It did a fair little bit of damage as well so likely it's a combo of velocity and bullet. I also did a torture test with the 162A-Max to see what that would do. I used the first shot from my 22-250 as a target, then placed 3 shots on top of it. The plate stood up fairly well to that. I'll attach that one as well, but mostly to brag. :)

I know, not a .50 BMG or .338 Lapua Magnum, but it still did some damage.

So after all of that, I am intrigued by the Flanges. Where does someone go to find one of these? I like the idea of a precut, very thick , very resilient plate.:D

Here is mine, QT 500 with square tubing folding frame. Hardly any nicks at all. The worst dings are from an SKS with steel bullets at 100yds. 7mm Mag just splash's lead, no dents.

I mostly use it for 650 to 1000yds depending on the wind conditions, and my .243 hardly chips the paint off.

this is also a 4145 at 200 yards the lower 2 splats
r 300 grain smk and the 3 upper holes r 250 accubonds in the Edge
i was surprized by the results

I think I have something geared up its a piece of T400 hard plate 12"X18" that hangs from a mobile base all you have to do is add weight to the box I will add pictures this weekend im hopeing to get out shooting saturday

Something to keep in mind for those who want to get into this kind of thing; targets don't have to be as elaborate as what the above members posted.

Mine is a simple set up. And I'm not out allot of money when dumb ass hunters decide to take them.

Agreed, it is cheap and easy but sometimes people like to hear the "gong" for a confirmed hit especially at longer ranges.
To each and their own though.

Well we tried out some AR400 plate at 100 yards with a 260AI, a 6.5X284 and a 308.

Multiple hits in the same hole would cause pitting and a slight bulge on the back side.. I am not confident it could stand up to the Edges and Lapuas at that range( Couldn't test this as Jay's Edge being picked up Monday at ATR, Jeff's Lapua is in the mail from Wolverine and I just received my Pac-Nor Edge barrel today ).. but farther out and swinging they might..

Now to try QT 400 as well when we can...

Are you saying that the bottom impacts on this target were from a 300gr smk out of a 338 Edge at 200 yards? If so.......that's some mighty strong stuff. What velocity are you getting with the 300's?

Yes,,,the 2 lowers r the 300SMK and the one to the right was a (140`s)7mm-08.
i really think the plate swung back do to a high pivot point.
i tried sum 225SST`s on a similar plate and they drilled threw also at 200M.
i have had sum targets actually flip right around and wrap themselves around the x-bar.
more to come soon as i can get out again ...:)

Max velocity is 2900-2950fps depending on the powder.
My personal load (I borrowed from Shaun Carlock) uses H-1000@2850 fps. It seems to be the most accurate load and has near single digit ES.

biggerair is a dealer here and make/sells AR500 gong at a very reasonable price. I got a 12" gong from him.

These are popper targets that we are testing at the moment. They are cut from 3/8" AR500 plate and our standard gongs are 1/2" AR500 plate.

These shots were taken in a very controlled enviroment with proper protection for the shooter,(me!) and they were taken close!

I used, 7mm rem mag 139 gr all the way up to 175 gr.

The dents look like they are around 1/16" deep.

Some of the bullet energy was absorbed by the popper mechanism but that still was a 7mm bullet at a very close range.

AR500 is definitely the real deal.
