What else besides a 30-06?

When I bought my first centerfire rifle, I went for a 30-06 thinking it was a do it all rifle. Still think that way, but I'm finding myself wanting something else...

What would you get as another rifle if you already had a 30-06?

I hunt moose a sometimes deer (when I don't bag a moose). I have a .22lr/410ga rossi combo that's just perfect for grouse hunting.

I have a muzzleloader that I would like to swap for a crossbow (shameless plug, see other thread), but I wouldn't mind having both.

Only thing really I would be missing would be a 12ga...so, not really a centerfire.

Do you want a lighter or heavier C/F? If lighter,go with .243Win or .270Win.(varmint/predator). If heavier,45/70Gov, .300WinMag or .338Lapua. (Moose,Griz,Polar,Brown Bear). A good 12ga for waterfowl and your good.

really want a SxS if I can find one for a bargain...in 12ga, that should fit the bill just right!

well, off the 30.06, you could always look at the 338-06 or the .270, a poor man's magnum, or the .25-06; all good cartridges.

however, unless you reload, it's probably good to go with something that has good factory availability, so the .270.

then again, you could also look at the .308 and it's siblings like the 7mm-08, the .243 or the .338 Federal.

Instead of thinking another chambering, consider a different type/style of rifle and then choose the chamber.

You might now have a 30/06 in a "bush gun". Short bbl, low powered scope, fast handling, pump or semi. If so, why not buy a longer range rifle, something with a bolt action with 24-26" bbl with a higher powered scope in fast chambering or even another 30/06.

Ya, never thought of it that way! Thanks for pointing out the style / type part!

Always wanted a garand...but then again, it's a 30-06 lol
