What else besides a 30-06?

Go with a .25/06 or a .35 Whelen first... and then the other second... three rifles all on the /06 case, .25, .30, .35... for all that NA has to offer... cool... for more spread, go with light bullets in the .25/06 and heavy bullets in the .35 W, and 165's or 180's in the .30/06.

If I wanted something smaller I'd look at a .223, if I wanted something larger I'd look at a big case .375, if I wanted something similar, but different, I'd look at a .280 Ackely. If those don't get you fired up, perhaps your question is answered by a different type of .30/06 rather than by a different cartridge. If the rifle you currently have is a 24" sporter, maybe consider a Mannlicher stocked carbine, or maybe a gas gun like a BAR, then again its hard to get more traditional or cooler than a Ruger #1 or a Winchester 95. If the weight of your rifle has made trips afield tedious, a mountain rifle or an ultralight might be the answer.

I have a .270 Winchester and I'm in the same boat. Can use it for everything so I don't see a point in getting another rifle. Just can't hunt bison legally with it. That's fine because I've never got a Bison draw before. However if I do, Id get a 9.3x62 or a .375 H&H.

Woodleigh makes a .277/180, that with judicial loading, ought to surpass the legislated minimum muzzle energy, so the .270 is legal for Yukon Bison.

A 270 compliments a 30-06 nicely, but a 7-08 does it better. Its newer, cooler, and kicks a$$

I always thought the 30-06 and .270 were in the same class.

I would suggest that the OP take supercub's advice and find a different rifle. Obviously the 30-06 chambering is effective for all your big game hunting needs, find a rifle that works well as a backup or something different to carry for a walk, or something to use on a watch with longer range opportunities...

You dont say what your 30-06 gun action is but if it is a bolt what about a lever gun or semi? Something like a Savage Model 99F, or even an SKS - which would give you lots of cheap shooting fun and you can hunt deer with it...

The 270 is never legal for Yukon Bison, Boomer.............Regs say minimum 180 gn 30 cal bullet........

Ahh, when I posted that I wondered if there wasn't a bullet diameter element in addition to the muzzle energy requirement. But one might question why a .277./180 bullet is any worse than a .308/180 when both bullets are constructed equally, and going fast enough to produce 2800 ft-lbs.. There's more than a few .308/180s bullets I'd pass up for serious hunting, and factory Federal blue box is 100 ft-lbs shy of the 2800 required, as are others I expect.

That is something that has me wondering...I'd love to swamp my 30-06 for a 9.3x62, and then get 300 win mag for longer range as well (as suggested a couple post after yours)

Your #### will not fall off if you go in this direction.

I can confirm the effectiveness of the 9.3x62 against bison. And it should be good against BC moose.

I'd look at something in 243 to complement the 30-06. Probably a Savage lightweight hunter. Versatile for deer and coyote.

I would go with a different style as well. If my 30-06 was a bolt gun, then lever. If my 30-06 was SA, then bolt or lever etc.

Howdy everyone, thanks for all the replies.

As stated before, only muzzleloader and crossbow seasons where I hunt deer. Rifle and crossbow seasons for moose where I hunt.

My 30-06 is a m96. Nothing fancy. Does the job and don't mind too much if it gets dinged up while hunting. I do give it a quick oil rub if it rains during the day while hunting (I take care of her).

I wish I had a need for a .243... I wonder if I can convince government to change laws around caliber for coyote or at least introduce some deer here.

In addition to my 30 06 my next favourite is my 375 H&H because I can use it on deer moose, bear and it does less meat damage then my 300 WinMag with 250 gr bullets. IMHO

If I was shooting at 400 yards plus then I would say my 6.5x55 or 300 WinMag
I'm not really a fan of WSM cartridges even though I have owned them
