What else fits a .38-55?

No, the gun won’t take the pressure of other cartridges that might chamber. Check if any buddy’s reload and get help loading cast. Ammo is available and a good shop should bring it in for u.

Like said, long shot but I figured I would ask. Have a sweet old Win 94 and cant seem to find .38-55 readlily available. Anything else I could get away with, safely, feeding this rifle?

If memory serves you can use 375 Win brass, (different bullet diameter though), or modify to use 30-30 brass though it is a little short. - dan

375 Winchester will fit but is way over pressure and not safe. You can use the 375 case to reload it he 38 -55 with 38-55 data. I have a batch of 30-30 cases reformed which I use for lead bullet loads. I use 38-55 data. I fire them in my 375 and 38-55. Power charge is top end for 38-55 and low end for 375. Best option is to reload for 38-55. New 38-55 is over $60/20rnds local. I just found 68 rnds for $80 off of GP locally.

Don't chance any other ammo, as the man says. I wouldn't risk life, limb, or my 1894! You'll find some .38-55 ammo, but it might take a little while. I snap it up whenever I see it.

unfortunatly not mate, you could for ####s an giggles (but definatly shouldny) proberly stick a 3030 round in it an fire it, effectivly fire forming the brass an hopefully within reason to plink 50 yards or so to get the brass formed??

alternatibely jus trade it for a 3030 or 44 mag model 94 n go for it, nothin to lose there...except that beauty rifle...

i have a 375 win n love mine for what it is, reloading with store bought cast projectiles, i suggest ya do this, use a powder suitable an load at like 1500-1600 fps... bobyer uncle

Some 38-55’s have an issue with most commercial brass and cast bullets. I think the bore is bigger than the brass, so you can’t make your bullets big enough to fit the bore and still fit them in the case. I think starline makes thin wall brass to compensate for this. So you may want to slug your bore before you start.
I have zero actual knowledge of any of this, it’s all just stuff I’ve heard about and I’m trying to recollect..... I’m sure there’s guys who actually know the details and will correct me if I’m sending you down the wrong path....
Beauty rifle BTW....

Thanks everyone, this is why CGN is so great. Ill hang onto the rifle. It was my uncles. He bought it in 84/85 off a shelf at home hardware for under 150 and gifted it to me a couple years back with a box of ammo he bought at the same time.

I owned a "shooter" Sask Jubilee one time, the bore slugged at 378 but the chamber would only accommodate .375 loaded in WW brass so the proper bullets for the gun wouldn't chamber at all and the .375 slugs shot "minute of target board".

Get a set of dies and either some cast bullets sized for your barrel or if you want jacked the Speer or Sierra make a 220 gr FP that should work. Barnes I think makes some 255 gr jacketed for the 38-55 but a bullet will cost you a fair bit of change.
