What exactly is the average red rifle owner?

I like Red Rifles for two or three good reasons: historical significance ( e.g. I grew up during the Cold War and it is still amazing to think that there is no more USSR ); they are super dependable/reliable and certainly give true meaning to the word 'robust' and, they are excellent value buys. I also have nice fancy tactical and F/Class rifles but if I had to 'head to the hills' as it were and could only take one an SKS may well be an excellent choice.

Did you watch red dawn when you were a kid and plan with your buddies where to hide out in the hills. That's what we did. But if I were to take one rifle it would be my vz 58.

You're pretty lucky then as apparently according to the higher ups I need another 16 to complete my collection.

Those 16 are if you want a complete Russian collection. It doesn't take into account any of the interesting Chinese variants, the Romanians, the Albanians, the Korean, the Vietnamese, the Polish, the German, the Egyptian or the Yugos. Plenty of countries produced them, and many more had specific contract production runs outsourced for their own variations.

LOL ! Red Dawn was released in 1984 and at that time I'd already taken the Queen's Shilling and had pips on my shoulder but, yes, I think most lads myself included have thought ( maybe still think ? ) about taking to the hills :) Agreed the CZ858/VZ58 would actually be a better choice but sadly I sold mine :-(

If we did come under attack by the Chinese or some other crap country. Are we as canadian non restricted rifle owners allowed to remove the pin in our mags and allowed to get out the file and make the full auto?

If busting out the file to turn em into full auto was just that easy.

My guess is the Canadian gov't would charge any canadian like a criminal if they were to protect themselves in any form if the chinese were to invade, LOL

Very likely considering that without anyone helping us out, the Chinese would topple the Canadian government and replace it with a Chinese puppet government. Probably consisting of former NDP members. ;)

RED RIFLES ARE GLORIOUS INSTRUMENTS OF LIBERATION IN THE HANDS OF THE SELFLESS PROLETARIAN REVOLUTIONARY, AS THEY MARCH TO INEVITABLE VICTORY OVER THE GRAVE OF ROTTING CAPITALISM, INTO THE GOLDEN FIELDS AND VALLEYS OF COMMUNIST TRIUMPH !!!!!!111!!!!!1!!

Uh, like I mean, I find them functional and interesting. :)

I think it is great to own firearms made in the "Evil Empire". Russian SKS's are built to last, can take a beating, and always bo bang when you need them to. They are very functional and can be had for a song.

When we overthrow the puppet regime, be sure we put the SKS on the new Canadian flag!

I own a CZ 858 because I think it's the best tactical rifle (with modified furniture) for civilian use. I'm not a fan of the .223 round as I think it's useless for anything except combat and plinking. "Useless" meaning, inferior to the 7.62x39 as a civilian all-purpose round. The CZ is lighter, more durable, lower maintenance and probably the most accurate rifle using the 7.62x39 round. It only has one flaw, which are the scoping limitations but it can fit an Aimpoint micro + a x3 magnifier (with the Corwin arms receiver cover rails) and that's arguably the best combination for this rifle.

If they did take over I bet they would keep the HST. They already know how much Canadians are willing to pay high taxes. They may even disarm us and then sell us full auto AK47's that are stock piled from the 70's. They already made a killing selling cheap SKS's why not bring over AK47's for $800. Actually this could be a good thing less red tape, be able to open a bar or a whore house without gov't approval. I think the commies have more freedom to do what they want than we do.

Here's what a Red Rifle owner is not:

- smug in their sense of moral superiority about not buying anything Chinese, Russian or otherwise commie; and
- needing to troll the applicable forums with their "position" so as to feel good about themselves.

;)

Damn how true. I've got my work cut out for me it would appear ;)

I have a cz 858, and frankly I love her to death, never caused me any issues what so ever, and I only rough clean her after 500 rounds. remarkable little rifle up to 100 yards.
i like a rifle that when i pull the trigger it goes bang, pull the trigger again it goes bang again, etc.
Seems like only (non chinese) red rifles can good that.
So yah they're ugly, yah they're a biatche to put optics on, but fack it, they're fun and you never wind up cursing at them.

So for me it's not just about price, I always bring my little cz with me to the range, because I know my other guns will run into a problem of some kind, while with this little beauty I can still have fun while I'm there.

Only one word for true red rifles made in the old USSR or warsaw pact countries: DEPENDABLE!!!!

You spend 1500$ on a good quality AR, works maybe 90% of the time.
You spend 650$ on a CZ858, works 99.9% of the time.

It's not that hard to put optics on it either, just add a drilled and tapped side mount.

cuz if you don't own one your #### will fall off !!

And isn't it the official Cdn zombie gun? Too bad Z-max ammo wasn't as cheap as surplus ! No Zombie can survive this combination.

While I have a number of more expensive rifles I shoot regularly, I always take an SKS with me and I always end up doing some plinking with it. I enjoy shooting almost any gun that works, but the SKS is special; It's just fun to shoot, and for that reason it's one of my go to rifles when I introduce a new shooter to the sport. One of my SKSs is stripped down and has been put into a light plastic stock making it a tough, reliable, inexpensive semi-auto bush gun that's decently accurate with an optic mounted. I also have a non refirb Russian that's only seen a handful of rounds through it, but it's proudly displayed on my gun rack. I also have an old 91/30, but doesn't everyone?

I think part of my fascination with the classic red rifles stem from the place I grew up in. I can still remember the sound of the Saturday afternoon testing of the air raid siren, a persistent remnant of the height of the cold war era, located a mile or so away from where I lived, and it always reignited the "when the Russians attack" conversation among the group of my friends. Any time I see a Crylic letter on one of the guns or a can of ammo, I'm reminded that at one point in time most of us believed that we would all be attacked by the USSR and would most likely die in a nuclear exchange and never see past the 1970's. I also get a strange enjoyment from opening the spam cans of old surplus ammo; the people that packed it could not have imagined where it would end up, and how many years it would sit hidden away.

Have yet to get a SVT-40 but it's just a matter of making space for it....
