I started reloading for my m14 about 3 months ago. I'm about 6-700 rnds through the rifle

I got it where I want with a beat up GI stock that sports a cheek riser that is PERFECT for the steel CASM. Ill have a go at glass bedding it soon (the GI stock did decrease the accuracy of the gun compared to the plastic norinco one...) Right now I am figuring out what works reliably in it.

So far:

- round noses absolutely don't work, the bullet gets smashed into the shell by the action (they don't climb the feeding ramp, they just smash into the receiver)
- SP spitzer cycle reliably but the tip of the bullet gets deformed when the round is picked up
- FMJ work flawlessly
- BTHP work well and the tip stays almost intact

Notice I don't have a hunting bullet in the work flawlessly category yet...

I have some 150grn GMX balistic tip not loaded yet, do the ballistic tips get ripped off by the m14 action?

I rolled 40 rnds of RN that are now useless to me. I want to try stuff but avoid what clearly won't work...

Who here tried a bunch of stuff and can share this experience for those starting out like me?
 
I was surprised at how accurate 147gr military ammo from the 70's did in mine. I was shooting a railroad base plate consistently at 300m. I was shocked at how accurate it was so I decided to start hand loading for it.

Im using 168 gr BTHP hornady at 2675 fps powered by varget. I've done a OCW test to get to this number.

Here's my rifle and what I shot with iron sights the other day. I expect to see 2" or less with a scope.

My 3 rifles like different ammo which is no surprise .
The sub MOA rifle , LRB M25 , krieger stainless medium, her favorite load is Nosler J4 custom comp 168gr HPBT and for hunting I replace that bullet with a nosler partition or an accubond. I have not had any issue with the tips coming off.
My beater rifle shoots Federal Power Shock hunting ammo , that's her regular diet but she chews thru most FMJ as well. I avoid American Eagle and a few other cheapo brands but hirtenberger and norinco surplus are always reliable for function anyways.
 
I use hornady 155 grain amax on 44 grains of IMR 4895 or Varget 2.800 OAL
Nice and accurate
Also 150 grain HPBT Sierra Match Kings work just as well with the same load. These are good for hunting.

a consistent 2'' is about what I get (I had 1.5 with aguila fmj and the norc stock...but only for the first 5-10 shot after that it was opening to like 6'')

I hope to bring it back to a consistent 1-1.5 Looks like plastic tips aren't a problem for most, so Ill try some

Try some 150gn SP Hornady American Whitetail for hunting ammo. It feeds flawlessly in my M305. It also shoots great with ChiCom 147gn ball ammo.
 
I've got loads with 155 Amax (over Benchmark) and 168 Hornady HPBTs (over Benchmark and IMR4895) that reliably shoot 1.5 moa in my M14S. I also have a load with 150gr Hornady SPs that shoots pretty decent. No issues with any bullets not feeding properly although I haven't really tried anything but the aforementioned and a crate of Federal American Eagle.
 
the "popsicle " stick" trick may improve your accuracy- it Has to be used whenever you transfer from Chinese to usgi stock as the hole on the usgi is somewhat deeper and the pin is too short- if u don't do this the pin will "walk out" sooner or later- as for loads I have 7 and they all like something different from 147s to 168s

What is that trick?
 
150 gr Hornady Interlokt works and shoots best in mine. I have come to the conclusion that my m14 shoots much better with flat base bullets. Boat tail not so much. weird i know, i have tried several brands too. Difference is like 7-8 moa vs 2-2.5moa at 100 yards.

Examine your connector lock by removing that barreled receiver from the USGI stock.

You will notice you Zhinese connector lock sit FLUSH with the side of the receiver (it’s a semi auto)...with the M1A rigs as well as REAL USGI M14 rifles, the connector lock extends about 3/16” to interface with the FA component connector rod. Your Norinco Plinko won’t have this longer connector lock (pin).

Now hold the USGI stock alongside the Xhinese stock. On the right side of the stock at the front of the magazine well you will notice a larger CUT OUT area (for USGI). On the semi auto Qhinese stock it’s a straight flush proposition since the connector lock is shorter and flush with the receiver....

It’s said before, by gluing on a cut down popsicle stick alongside that USGI stock interior where the connector lock resides, you prevent that Zhinese connector from wandering out during the firing process (when magazine tension slackens its effect on the connector lock).

Net result:

Connector lock wanders OUT of position and op rod guide and spring JAM the magazine in place on the firing line and now you have a SHZTshow on your hands.... :evil:

In short, YER #### will fall off!!
