I have in the past used a 12 gauge here in Alberta when hunting season of grouse and deer overlap.
I sit silently beside a game trail with the wind in my favor waiting for WT deer, grouse, or coyote in this order. A 12 gauge slug shooter with a foster up the pipe and good buckshot handy makes this feasible and legal here in this province. As long as I remember the plug I'm gtg.

Winchester 101 20 gauge choked mod/imp with 1 oz #7.5 lead game loads #6's later season. Went for my first walk for the season with the old man today and i got a nice grouse over the dogs and missed alot of others....happens... need some more frost and leaves down.

, you guys with the 12 gauges must really like your grouse tenderized ...lol

I don't eat the neck and head ;)

I voted for a 12 gauge but I'd prefer a 16 gauge as a dedicated upland gun. Mind you now that I'm in pheasant preserve country a 12 might be better.

If I go out specifically for grouse and bunnies I use this sweet little L.C. Smith 28 ga. But I must admit to having taken more grouse with 7MM RM, 300 WM and 300 Wby as an aside to a big game hunt.

I usually shoot them while I'm doing something else, and if that something else includes carrying a rifle, I might have a few small game rounds in my pocket. Its the handloader who makes a rifle versatile.

I've used the 22 for all but one of my grouse which I took with 12ga. Just picked up an 870 in 20ga to be my go to grouse gun. I'll be trying it out for the first time next weekend when I go up north for the opening of the trapping season.
