What game can be taken with a .243Win vs a .270Win?

I have both calibers...the recoil on each isn't bothersome but the .270 kicks a little harder. If you want to manage recoil, install a 1" Limbsaver recoil pad or get a smith to install a muzzle brake.

I've only seen terrain in BC on Wild TV so am only guessing - the .270 with better effective range (500 yds +) would be my go-to-gun for deer.

I wouldn't get either my self, and I have owned both. Get a 7mm-08, mild recoil in a short action rifle. When loaded with a quality 140 gr bullet your good for deer to moose. IMHO

:agree:

If you are open to other possibilities, this is excellent advice and a truly superb cartridge, as is the 260 Rem which you may wish to consider. My 11 year old son has been shooting a 260 for 3 years now, recoil is not an issue and this is a good 250-300 mtr rifle easily, as is the 7-08.

Do you reload? If not then I would say check out the 25-06, no recoil and will do all a 270 will. Good thread on 243 vs 25-06 in "hunting and sporting rifles"
forum, lots of info and might offer you even more options.

Then there is the 257 Wby and 264 Win both of which outperform the 270 with about the same recoil or less.

My advice is to do a little more research before you limit your choices to the 243 or 270, these are fine cartridges but there are better out there that meet your criteria and won't boot your teeth loose.

Another just came to mind, which I would HIGHLY recommend and that's the 6.5X55, like I said lots of possibilities.

Gun choice, in most cases, has more to do with felt recoil, than caliber. My experience. Some guns hit harder than others of the same caliber.

If you are open to other suggestions - think of a 6.5x55. It has a large range of applications (from 100 gr to 160 gr bullets) and no noticeable recoil.
