What game will you NOT hunt, and why?

Including birds? You CAN shoot pheasants without a dog but not very often.

I dont' think Ill ever pay the big trophy fees for any animal......I mostly hunt what I can eat or claim a pelt from...exept for Red Fox, Ive been seing a lot of them around the cottage road and cant bring myself to shoot but would if they would become a nuisance .

Foxes – They are relatively rare, they eat rodents and they are very cool – why kill them???
Cougars – Just such an amazing animal, I would never kill one outside of a defence situation
Wolves – Again, such an amazing and impressive animal, I won’t kill one
Grizzly – I can’t even fathom taking the life of one of these incredible beasts outside of a protection situation ( in which I would not hesitate)
Bobcat and Lynx – Too rare and too cool to shoot
Deer, Moose, Black Bear, Rabbits and Game Birds are enough for me....I would hunt sheep or goat if I have the chance. I consider yotes targets of opportunity and will kill them from time to time as I know there populations are very high... we are all hypocrites to some degree I figure.

There are SOOO many wolves in all of BC that it would amaze you. Killing a few is not a bad thing, in fact it's encouraged to help all ungulate populations.
Grizzly populations are the most scrutinized large mammal in BC. If there is a season, it's not a conservation concern. The hunting of grizzly is also heavily scrutinized.

Of course, it's up to you what you hunt, just giving some pertinent information about those species.

I hear you on all points...I have no issue with others hunting the animals I won't, It's just that I simply don't want to. (however, I will admit I hate to hear of or see Grizzly's being taken, they are just so awsome)
i have no interest in shooting a giraffe or elephant. in north America i have no interest in shooting anything that's not a pest or doesn't taste good.
gives me leeway on when i will shoot something say a raccoon in the middle of the forest away from anyone. its not hurting anybody, no reason to shoot it. one on my driveway is fair game.

If there is a legal hunting season and I had a tag or pest control is needed I would not hesitate to hunt/shoot it...
If I spotted someones pet dog chasing any wild animal like a deer I wouldn't hesitate to shoot it as well...

I hunt neither for the food or the trophy, rather I hunt for the experience of hunting. My favorite way to hunt is still hunting and my favorite game is the game that can hunt back.
Lions and elephants are so identifiable with the African experience I would happily hunt either . . . or both if I could afford the tags, but $100K hunts are simply beyond me. As it was, sharing the ground with them in the Selous was an incredible experience. One evening when we were returning to camp we were charged and I can tell you that being the subject of an elephant charge is heady stuff. But another animal identifiable with Africa is a zebra, that I could shoot but didn't. No reason for it, its just that shooting a zebra is not something that interests me just like I wouldn't hunt wild horses in Canada or the US. I see nothing wrong with it and any one who participates in it I has my blessing, but its not something I wish to do nor do I yern for the black on white stripped rug (black on orange is another matter entirely). Another game animal I turned down was a baboon. There was something about shooting an ugly little man that seemed just a little unreasonable.
More important though than the species being hunted is the method we use to hunt. At one time I thought poorly of hunting from a blind over looking a bait. To me it was a lazy man's uninspiring way to hunt. I wanted to be hot on the track of my quarry, and if after dangerous game I wanted the confrontation. Mark Sullivan changed my opinion somewhat. "Imagine," he said you are in a grass bind, its not full daylight yet, and you hear him come. He sniffs at the blind and leaves crunch under his paws with each step as he inspects the strange object, and you now that it is only a few inches of grass that separates you from a 450 or 470 pounds of African lion!" He went on to tell the story of a lion hunt he made with a client were a 450 pound lion put the run on a young male who attempted to feed at the same bait. The young lion running for its life, jinked past the blind and the big guy ended up right in it with the hunters! Now if only he could have captured that on video, his buffalo and hippo charges would have paled by comparison!

No interest in Rhino hunting, love the beasts and far too few out there. Same for Tiger. Elephant and giraffe populations are actually too high in areas I've hunted, and they're destroying habitat, no qualms hunting them in those situations where it's warranted, and I'd enjoy it. Hound hunts for large game (fox and up, really) is out for me.
Gorilla or any game which looks like a person.
I have read all the posts of this thread. It satisfy me to know that so many guys don't hunt bears. I want to let them know that I so much appreciate it.
I love bear hunting. I love eating every part of bear meat which is the most delicious I have ever eaten

I hunt everything I can hunt. (and eat most everything) I Can't afford to go for african big game, and moose season conflicts with work so I don't hunt those though.....
