Going goose hunting with my son soon and need some advice on what load to use for Bismuth-tin. Haven't been goose hunting for some time. We can not use steel as our guns are not choked for it (fixed chokes on older guns) and I understand that we can not use Hevi-Shoot until we put in chokes. My son is shooting with a 3" semi and I'm shooting a 2 3/4" semi. What would you recommend for either gun? Thanks. :dancingbanana:

Bismuth or Tungsten Matrix. TM is as close to lead as you can get. I would go with it over bismuth.

They make a great 2.75", 1 1/4oz, 3 shot load that is awesome.

If you need duck loads, get the same load, but in 5 shot.

I have an older semi (Winchester Model 50) with a fixed full choke (2.75") and shoot steel out of it regularly with no problems. The best load for my purposes (<30 yard shots over decoys) is 1-1/16oz #2 shot @1550 fps. Winchester Xpert patterned best for me at that range and is reasonable at $10 per box. For further shots I would go with same load in BB's.

I've tried Hevi-shot in #4 for geese and ducks and found it was a little overrated for the price. Worked fine though.

Don't know if you are reloading for 12 Ga. or not but the beauty of bismuth is that you can use regular wads and powder, Precision Reloading has tons of recipes and supplies including bismuth shot $95/7lbs. US.

Thanks guys. We do reload for skeet and trap, so reloading is not a problem. I'll get a recipe book and go to it. If I'm reloading TM and have never shot steel, is there any benefit to going to steel other than saving a few more bucks on top of the dollars I'm saving by reloading? I understand that usually you need to go down two load sizes to equal the hitting power of lead or TM. I used to shoot # 2 lead in the past. Any recommendations for reloading that you find very effective for geese and ducks with TM?
Thanks,

You can't buy TM to load independently.

Shooting TM is like shooting lead. Shooting steel is like....shooting steel.
