Hi,
I've recently acquired this beauty:

thumbnail_image1.jpg

But after shooting about two cylinders of full load 357s, the joint on my middle fingers gets a beating.
I have big hands with fairly long fingers, and when I clinch the grips, the middle joint of my middle finger is resting on the back of the trigger guard.
after a dozen shots, I get a sore finger/joint from recoil. So of course I'm thinking of replacing the grips, what would you suggest?

I don't have that issue when I'm shooting my Colt King Cobra with its Pachmayr grips, but I would prefer wood grips for the blue 586.

Thanks!
ps: pics would be appreciated

I have a set of Hogue laminated rosewood no finger groove grips on my 4" 586 (and my model 10 and my 29!). They just fit me very well, and look great.

For the very reason you are describing, a lot of the owners changed over to a rubber Pachmayr or Hogue as the comfort level is far better(Hogue is superior IF you decide to go with rubber). If u wish to stick with wood, the series of wood grips from Hogue are very nice and look very classy. Our LGS just got in an unfired NIB 586 4in bbl today which has sat untouched for about 20yrs. Also has the Goncalo Alves grips. Will most likely sell for less than $500 and has me tempted, but I already have a few 586's..Must resist :)

The Pachmayr have a rubber back strap, so it will give you a bit more to hang on to, I have set off a gun at the moment I am working on, I could post a picture, if you are wondering what they are like. Those Smith grips are nice, but for heavy shooting the rubber feels better. Fancy grips will still give you the same trouble.
I love Hogue finger grove mono's, but they are not that great if you have large hands.
I have smaller hands and as a rule shoot wimpy loads these days.

I would agree with the above that Pachmayr's are on the larger side and good for recoil. They shoot well but not much to look at.

For what it is worth, the wood Hogue grips are thicker than the rubber Hogue monogrips. I have set on an N-Frame and really like the way they feel compared to the thin rubber grips. Note that the Hogue fit is not ideal for everyone. If you are shooting relatively light loads, it is a non-issue. If you are shooting heavy loads, and the grip does not fit you well, it will really pound the webbing between your thumb and forefinger. I find this particularly bad for me with the rubber Hogues and the 4" 629. The closed back Pachmayrs and new factor S&W rubber grips are more comfortable to shoot for me.

Here are some wood Hogues on a 686.

If you want the best wood grips for big hands and are willing to pay, look no further than Nill grips with the closed back.

I like wood as well, that top one looks like Hogue?
This is a colt one I got on a auction cheap, for my Colt .
Quite large, but have not tried it yet, I like the factory wood colt ones to look at, but they will chop your hand up with 357 mag.DSC02088.jpg

first choice is Nill Griffe from Germany, have one Nill grip on my 686-4 and are the best, shipping from EU is a lil'bit expensive...h t t ps://www.nill-griffe.com/Replacement_Grips_with_open_back_69.html

second place for a very good grip is "Jerry Miculek" from US ...h t t ps://miculek.com/product/mic-620c-r-kl/

Thanks all for the replies.

I checked Hogue's website. More choices than I expected in wood grips.
They seem to be hard to find from dealers up here tho.

It'll be my winter quest šŸ˜‰
