I am looking for a Multi-purpose shotgun with a moderate price range.

This will be my first shotgun and I plan to use it for a variety of activities, Waterfowl, Turkey, Deer hunting as well as clay pigeon shooting.

I am interested in a pump action. and I want something that does everything well that is both durable and reliable. shooting both shot and slugs

also if you could let me know what size barrel (and or separate barrels) and chamber is the most versatile.

As far as aesthetics - I like a classic looking style. Wood and blue finish or matte black

Budget ($0-$750)

Thanks,

PT

i would say a Mossberg 500 (or a 500 series) in my eyes they are the best gun ever built. verry reliable, rugged, fun and affordable.
between me and my brother we have 2 mossberg pump 12gauges, a older canadian made lakefield/mossberg 500ab and a new maverick/mossber model 88 (the more affordable mossberg sreries) we have handled and shot remington 870's and they are also a good gun but we still prefere mossberg for the way they are built and also the price.

you can't go wrong with a Remington 870. I think the last time I cleaned mine was 3 years ago... still cycles every time, still goes bang every time. I can't say anything bad about that gun.

The Browning BPS is a great gun, also the Benelli Nova. Lots of options for a pump in your price range. Shoulder them all and get the one that fits you best.

Benelli Novas come with a 3 1/2 inch chamber and a 28 inch barrel is what mine has. I plan on using it for turkey and when bird season rolls around to. Its a sweet gun can pick them up on the exchange for a good price generally.

it basicly all depends on what you want, and are willing to pay. the mossberg are usualy in 3" but for $313 + tax and shipping from ellwood epps you can get a brand new mossberg 535 3.5" magnum model. as for barrel length you can get almost anything.

Mossy 930 semi two barrels, bird and deer with three chokes for 540 plus tax at ellwood epps. Can not find a better deal than that. Best semi for the money. Skip the pump and get the semi. Right in your price range.

Ive got a mossy 500. Best value gun in your price range. Also in wood/blue at cabellas for $300ish dollars and comes with 2 barrels, a slug and one for everything else. Set of chokes included.

I got the 3 in one combo, and its a dream. You dont NEED 3.5" shell capability, but if you want it, the mossy 535 will do it and comes in the same combos. As for legnth, its usually preference. I like using the 24" but most comes with 28" standard.

You should go for 12 ga. Its the most popular size, and you will find a lot availiable for it. And resale is good with that size too if you wish to sell in the future.

X2 on that - good advice. I would say the 535 in a 3-1 combo would be a great place to start and be very functional for your needs.

Thanks,

the 535 is one of the front runners. I checked the 3 barrel combo (camo version) out at a local shop- the action felt great; however, the stock was so light it felt like the gun was front heavy(28" barrel was attached). I am used to my brothers 870 that feels like a heavier stock.

Mossberg does not have 3 barrel combo in the 535 with a wood receiver.

I like how the Mossberg comes drilled and tapped for a sight rail - in case I ever want to use that option. I haven't found any other shotgun that comes with that option

It seems like the 3-barrel 535 has the most positive points going for it.

yep id go with chamber 3 1/2" since you can use anything from 2 3/4 -3/12" with it.
since it is your first shotty, you can try different shells with it being 3 1/2" chamber.
some cheaper shotty will not really allow you to shoot steel shots and slugs do scratch the barrel real good. Changable choke and Length dont really matter at all.

My saying is why not go with most popular and Known brand with less negative rationg like Remingtons. If i were you i would get a seperate gun for slugs with fixed choke. like beat up mossy 500 i wouldnt care if my truck ran over it. still works good and cheap enough to put slugs and wont feel bad about it. good luck on your shotgun hunt!

I was in the same boat as you before trying to pick up a one gun for them all kind of thing and went with the 870. I grabbed a 20 gauge compact since I'm not hunting waterfowl and needed the shorter length of pull for my arm reach.

So far I have had no problems with it at all and it has become easily my favorite gun to shoot. When I bought it I didn't get the combo deal with the slug barrel beacuse I figured if i'm deer hunting I'd be using a rifle however after becoming so comfortable and use to the 870 I went ahead and bought a rifled barrel and red dot for deer.

My advice is pick your gun based 100% on what feels the best to you. Hold them all, swing them around a bit, shoulder them and if you get the opportunity shoot them. I was dead stuck on getting a Nova based on online reviews but after holding it and then picking up the 870 it wasn't even a matter of thought, the 870 just fit right.

Go to a gun shop and shoulder the mossberg 535, 500 and remington 870. The pumps are good for deer and turkey but I prefer a semi if you are going to spend more time in the duck blind. A mossberg 535 with three barrels in camo is 550 at ellwood while a semi 930 is 530 plus taxes. The mossberg 930 is a great gun. I have a three barrel 535 and the gun is great for deer and turkey, however the semi is better for all three. Trust me most people go to semi's after using a pump in the duck blind.
