I am new to the board and new to semi's and am interested in the M14 Norinco from Marstar. I have read here that the base model is ok, but you can turn it into a great AR15.

I have no skills in gunsmithing and would like to know who can do it and what should be done to get great accuracy @ 50yrds in a lightweight package that won't jam and is built rock solid. Is the Norinco a good choice? What would be a better choice? If I wanted to keep it at the farm for deer hunting, what caliber is recommended? What would something like this cost? I'm going to buy one, but want it to be a great one and am willing to spend.

Thanks for the advice.

The m14 is chambered in .308 Winchester aka 7.62 x 51 nato. The ones at marstar are Chinese copies of the select fire M14 battle rifle. It is a non restricted semi automatic that can be used legally for hunting. .308 caliber uses a 30 caliber bullet and it comes in a wide range of bullet types and weights. This is a short action caliber. The m14 is not light and only comes in .308. Out of the box a Norinco M14 (m305) is more than accurate enough to take a deer at 150+ yards if you use the correct ammo.

The AR15 is a restricted semi automatic rifle chambered in .223. It cannot be used anywhere but a certified range and requires a transportation permit. It is not an option for your purposes and requires a RPAL.

The m305 (m14) can be upgraded to have a more AR appearance, e.g. pistol grip, rails etc but does not share any common internal parts with an Armalite 15 type rifle. The m14 and AR15 are completely different.

just to make things a little more muddled, there was a variation called an M15-FOR A SHORT WHILE- it was a HEAVY BARRELED variant with all of the f/a goodies of the m14a1e2-i remember reading about it in the first editions of differents book on line

you can turn it into a great AR15.

In a way, that is almost what some guys are doing by adding modular type stocks which accept AR parts, such as stocks, grips and so forth. It seems that the AR craze is extending to everything, with even H&R rifles sporting M4-style collapsible buttstocks and A2 grips.

I always recommend that you go out and buy the rifle you want and dont worry about modifications and upgrades but put the money into a good 22 lr.
I vote for 10/22 you can play with that and get an idea of what you want on your big boy rifle

The OP was one of the best 1st posts I have ever read!:D
We all have to start somewhere Jafo67, at least you are on the right track posting here where the experts are!

I shudder to think of the epicness of the flame festival that would have happened if he posted this anywhere else :p ;)

lol, ya, flame fest is right lol. I liked my M14 in her stock config' for a long time, really havent done anything to it yet, just a new stock. Get your pal if you havent already, get the rifle and pratice. Then talk about moding it. As for the gunsmith, if anyone knows of a smith' who can turn a m14 into a ar 15, then hes gotta be good lol j/k
welcome to the M14 world

the sugestion of an SKS was a good one as well. cheep to buy, cheep to feed. And no matter what you do to them they will keep on hammering away like a #### star lol. Low recoil as well. Combine it all and you have everything you need for a great pratice rifle. There not super accurate but you can learn the basic's and have gun playing with different stocks scope mounts and the like. Its not as cheep to mod a m14
