As an instructor, I would also agree with those that suggest a .22. A used Ruger 22 Mk 1 or 2 will run around $250. Value packs of 550 rounds will cost about $15 at Wal-Mart.
Find a 22 that fits your hand and practice, practice, practice.
Also get some good instruction. A couple of lessons can go a long way to set the fundamentals correctly. The basics are paramount.
