What happened here?

Thats not a fireforming load, it's a MAX load for the .257AI.

Its a max load for the Roberts, not the AI. Anyway - the charge weight is obviously not part and parcel to what happened here.

So we've determined that off-spec brass is part of the problem, now to figure out the rifle.......
 
You had a slam-fire before the bolt was locked in place. The case pressure kept the cartridge walls locked in contact with the chamber walls (as it always does) but the primer was not fully supported by the bolt face so it blew out and enlarged the primer pocket.

Check out that bolt and trigger. Either the pin was protruding when you slammed the bolt forwards or the sear tripped before the bolt was locked. I really don't think it was a simple as an overly large primmer pocket.
 
Tried the bump test and it passes. I'm guessing I was the one that touched it off the same time I closed the bolt. The bolt face looks good so I'm not worried about that. I took a fresh primer and put it in the shell and tipped it over and it fell out. One crappy piece of new brass I guess. Once again, thanks for all the replys.

This is the minimum safe trigger pulled for a field rifle.
My brother almost shot his right feet off learning this very important lesson (the shot landed 4-6" in front of his toes since he was following basic safety rules but did not realize how a light trigger is dangerous in winter).

Also, you should have your rifle inspected by a qualified gunsmith if you have even an iota of doubt about you rifle's safety.

HUH? What did I miss? The brass is out of spec? The powder charge had no part in this? Then where did the pressure come from?

I don't see that as having been at all proven.

One important safety tip: set your trigger to at least 3.5lbs if you're using it for non target shooting in winter.
This is the minimum safe trigger pulled for a field rifle.

I don't even own a rifle with a trigger set above 3lbs, and I have hunted in -30 with no issues at all.You just have to be aware that wearing gloves or having cold fingers makes your fingers far less sensitive. If you keep your finger off of the trigger until you intend to fire, it isn't an issue.

My point was that the powder charge is within specs for the Bob - so it is definitely within spec for an AI chamber.

I agree with the "slam-fire" assessment given above - the next question is obviously - why?
 
The AI chambers are purposely cut short, when compared to the parent case. The "GO" gauge becomes the "NO-GO" gauge. The reason for this is that the bolt closes snugly to center the parent case in the chamber. There shouldn't be a headspace issue.

Personally, if this were my rifle I wouldn't shoot either the ammo nor the rifle. Now, all I have to by is the info presented in this thread, but given just that info I would not use either.

The case shows signs of high pressure. Period. The primers were not falling out of the case, but now they are, after firing. The cause of the high pressure needs to be determined.

The rifle needs to be inspected, if this is a new chamber then there may be problems. If it's a chamber that has been used in the past and is proven then there may be less to suspect.

But hey, that's just me being cautious.
 
One again thanks for all the replys. I hand prime all my cases and do remember one being very easy to seat and thinking I might see something with this case after fire forming. Perhaps this is the one?

What gun are you shooting?

I do remember the bolt being all the way down when it fired. In retrospect I'm sure I touched the trigger at the same time as I closed it.:redface: Not too bright on my part.
 
Some triggers have an adjustment to take up the trigger free-play - which if over tightened, prevents the sear from fully engaging the notch.

A few years ago, a fellow jacks a shell into a Savage - and left my ears ringing - Don't mess with that setting - a bump test would not make it recur but just occasionally closing the bolt would drop the firing pin.

Check your rifles - if the trigger has absolutely no free-play, then the trigger could be holding the sear from fully engaging.

Also - point your rifle - or handgun - in a safe direction when dropping the slide on an auto, the hammer on a revolver - and when closing the bolt on rifles.

Lever actions that require that you empty them by jacking bullets through the chamber - and most have no safety - should make the hair on the back of your neck stand up - whether you are doing it - or someone else.

What signs? There is no sign of brass flow on that case head. Hell there wasn't enough contact with the bolt face to smudge off the soot. The primer is not ripped to hell like they normally are when blown from an overload.
 
The OP states a new primer falls out of this particular case. The primer that fired the case was seated, made it all the way to the range, was loaded into the rifle and ignited the powder charge. Upon firing the primer fell out of the case. The primer pocket is now too large to even hold a primer.

When primer pockets become larger upon firing pressure is usually the culprit.
 
I just remembered this during supper but this summer I shot 2 rounds of 243 Win which contained 15% more powder than the maximum load (caused by a faulty electronic scale) and got 2 cases that look exactly like the one in the picture: an enlarge primer pocket and gas leaks around the primer.

I was out today and had the barrel pointing to the sky when I closed the bolt on this one and it went off on it's own. The primer fell out when I opened the bolt. It's new brass so I'm guessing a loose primer pocket and it backed out a bit?

What kind of gun did it happen in? If you closed the bolt fast enough without the sear catching a hold of the fireing pin, could it have gone off? Does the gun have a rebounding fireing pin?
 
Blown primer

this happened to me this summer (not the AD, I wasn't there I have no opinion) in the photo the flash hole looked oversize, I had 2 X 243 new W-W cases with oversize flash holes do exactly the same thing. I noticed prior to loading but loaded them anyway to note result, marked them and fired with appropriate care and voila, both blew the primers bigtime. NOT over press at all, same load as the other 48, none of which even flattened the primers. I have been frinding more and more flaws with new W-W cases, anyone else?

PS We all have ADs some may be shooter some may be mechanical some we will never know. Hence the preaching of muzzle awareness at ALL times, glad to hear you were responsible and the only consequence is a question mark not a grave marker.
