What happened?

I was shooting my rolls today, 9mm. All is good and then - boom! This happened. Wear safety glasses, guys. They are there for a reason. I am a little puzzled what could have cause this. I only suspect a magnum primer got in to the pile of the regular ones. Casing problem?

magnum primer would NOT do that... I take it you had one to many to drink when you where loading and gave her a Double charge!

Looks like a double charge I don't think a magnum primer would have made that big of a difference. But this is just a opinion no real science to it.

Isn't double charge will do more severe damage to the barrel and frame? I am asking because pistol is fine.

Looks like an over charge or fired-out-of-battery to me.

A magnum primer wouldn't cause it.

I've used magnum primers when low on standard and there is a bit more pressure but nothing like that.

Looks like a case failure (bad case). With the feed ramp unsupported in most chambers it can cause a weak area. When its reloaded and under pressure it fails.

Double charge would likely do more damage than that. I would bet a bad case or an out of battery discharge.

What firearm did this happen in? That looks like a 1911 barrel to me.

As for the kaboom itself - that looks like it fired out-of-battery. Any possibility that the primer was high and ignited prematurely when "hit" by the closing slide?

cracked case. hard to detect under regular checks. not a biggie, carry on. put the case in your hall of WTF

been loaded too many times- had the same thing happen myself, and i use a progressive, so there is NO chance of a double charge- lost the little knob on the slide stop that holds the slide back as well as blowing the mag all to heck and gone - THIS IS THE CHANCE YOU TAKE WHEN YOU USE RANGE BRASS

Not out of battery - the casehead is flush with the barrel shroud.
Could have been a bad case.
I would think an overcharge was most likely. Pretty hard to double charge a 9mm - a lot of loads are close to being compressed. Not like a .38SP.
What was the load? What powder dispensing system?
