hey folks,
what height rings do i need for an M305, aluminum Sadlak mount, and Bushnell 3200 Tactical 10x40?
looking at TPS rings, also trying to decide between steel vs alum, theres only a $6 price difference between the two. im leaning towards the steel but the M305 is already a heavy rifle so if the aluminums will hold them solidly i can save a bit of weight.

ive seen some setups id consider unacceptable, with the scope mounted quite high (perhaps to retain use of the irons). I like my scopes as low as possible over the bore, if i wanted to use irons id just tip off the scope.

any help is much appreciated,

I had to dump my old Weaver rings. They had a hook on one side and a pair of screws tightening the whole thing down and a plastic thumb screw to the rail but they were not up to the task. Replaced them with a set of Burris extreme with 3 screws on each side, a nut to the rail and a proper recoil flat. They appear to be holding fine.

As for height you need a bit of math to find the center of the scope above the rail. Depends what might be in the way where your objective lens will sit.
Objective outer dia. minus tube dia. divided by 2 = minimum height

Lets say you end up with 3/8 ". You get next higher or 1/2" high rings.
Burris lists actual height - the reason I use theirs. Measurements on their website and Mystic has them.

Or you can just use wood blocks and sit the scope on the rail till you get the right height.
This is a pic with the Weaver rings (I think they were 1/2" high) but I have a Promag mount (also from Mystic).
It sat so low I had to file a relief in the aperture sight for clearance.

thanks,
i havent received the mount yet so i cant calculate in advance -- was hoping someone had tried the combo before (both scope and mount are pretty common) and knew what size rings you could get away with.

i ordered the low steel TPS TSR 'W' rings. if theyre too low, i can always use them on another rifle and just order another set.

i did a lot of research on the TPS rings and from everything ive read the aluminum ones are more than sufficient, and better than many steel offerings from other manufacturers... but tightening fasteners tapped into aluminum always gives me the willies - so ill take the minor weight hit and get the steel.

ok just for the record for anyone looking for a mounting solution:

low TPS TSR "W" 1" rings
Sadlak mount
40mm objective scope (1.91" objective outer diameter)

is the PERFECT height. low to the receiver but clears everything and is just high enough to be able to make use of the irons.

both the Sadlak mount and TPS rings are top-notch quality and im very pleased i decided to go this route.
