what hunting rifle for newbie

Tikka T3 or Howa 1500, 308 or 7mm-06, Japanese Bushnell 3500 3-9x40. Done

Want something much nicer for $300 more? Buy a CZ 550 and keep it for life, but the Tikka or Howa are great.

A lot of good rigs for sale in the EE for $1500. You can get out of the entry level rifles with a optic for $1500.

Caliber pick of these 270, 30-06, 7mag, 300 win. Thats in order of recoil tolerance and effectiveness on large game. Most anything is good for deer. Something capable of say 165gr bullet at 2900+ for big bears or moose.

Don't overlook the Husqvarna rifles imported from Sweden by Trade Ex. They're lightly used but in good condition. I have one (manufactured late 1950s) and am very pleased with it. These had a very good reputation in Canada in the 1960s and I well remember when my Dad got his back in the day. Efficient, smooth modified Mauser action. (Some of the earlier ones are in an FN-made standard Mauser action, but I prefer Husqvarna's in house modification -- no stripper clip cutout, smaller safety and mag release.) Mine has fixed sights which are bang on a 100 yards. Easily scoped. Swedish steel. Quality walnut stock. Trade Ex's imports have obviously been owned by hunters, not been shot out at a range. Lots in 30.06. Good value (around $600). I understand there's some limitation in Sweden on the number of firearms a person can own, which apparently explains how Trade Ex is able to acquire so many nice older ones.

Better value at Trade Ex might be one of the BSA CF2 s they have in .308Win or .30-06 for around $500. Any scope mounts/bases for the Remington 700 will fit a CF2. I've owned two of this model (both .243Win) and they both had very good triggers and both grouped under one inch at 100m. BSA made very good barrels.

As with many old rifles, especially from defunct makers. But if you find a BSA whole and in working order, you probably won't need any more parts.

Lots of good used reliable gun for about $5-600. Ruger 77, Rem 700, Win 70. In many cartridges. Any mid cartridge ( generate 1000 ft lb energy at 150 yds) will do you well. 270,280,7-57,7-08,06,7 mag,30 cal mag. A good name scope 3-9 you are ready to go.
Jorg, where are you at? I would be happy to have you shoot some rifles to see what fits and what you like. Others at your local club will do the same.
