What if I am not a meat hunter? What do I do with the deer?

Hello all,

I haven't been out hunting yet but I am wondering. When I do go deer hunting, I am not going for the meat my first time. What will I do with the deer? One of my friends said he would take it if he doesn't get a deer but in the case that he gets a deer, what do I do with it? I have no idea how I would move the deer either since I drive a Sunfire.

Anybody know something on this, please let me know.

Thanks

Interesting question, cereal83.

Probably not a wealth of experience available on this subject, since most of us would keep our game. I can't comment on who does what in Ontario, but here in Alberta some food banks and other charities will accept wild meat under certain conditions. I'd try calling a couple of such organizations and give your local chapter of Fish and Game Assoc. a call, too. They'll probably be able to point you to someone who will accept your donation with gratitude.

Honestly? I would say, "Don't shoot", get your gun, stomp/stalk the bush, enjoy your hunt, but if you do not plan on eating your kill, or do not have anyone to give it to, then I would sugest not killing anything.

Not to mention, the hunt is the fun part, after you pull the trigger it's all work, and not fun either. Blood and guts up to your elbows, dragging, skinning, butchering. All not alot of fun.

Better yet, skip the gun and take a really nice Camera. Maybe blasphemy to say on a guns forum, but I would say not so much as killing an animal and not using it.

Have a good hunt, but hunt responsibly.

As mentioned above ther may be charities that would take your meat as well.

Well I don't want the meat. I would like the antlers and maybe the head. I just don't want to shoot a dear and leave it there, thats not what I am saying or I am thinking of doing but I swear I saw a poll if people were meat hunters or Trophy hunters and a lot of them weren't for the meat so I was wondering what the people who are trophy hunters did with the deer.

Get a camera? No thank you. I will look into the charities and stuff like that and hopefully I can find a good solution.

This is only for deer. I will eat moose, duck and animals like that but I don't know about deer.

Thanks

Quite a few people go deer hunting for other reasons for the meat. I am just trying to figure out what they do with it after that. I am also pretty sure leaving a deer dead in the middle of nowhere falls under "don't let the animal spoil"

Ahh I guess forget I asked this. Maybe I should just take up sewing since I don't want to eat deer.

Thanks guys, maybe I will think before going deer hunting.

I can't believe what I am reading... please tell me you are joking. If you eat moose, ducks and other animals, why not eat deer. It's just as good.

The poll you are talking about did indeed list meat and trophy hunters as options... and I voted for trophy. But that does not mean I dont eat the meat as well. If I do happen to take a nice buck, that's a bonus to a freezer full of meat. If no trophy comes along, a spike or doe will fill the tag and I will be just as happy.

What the fug? What don't you know about eating deer ... wild game ... yet you'll eat moose?  Better days for this post  ... go target shooting at a range, buy a set of antlers from a flea market and stick to eating cereal there #83! :p

Hey all,

I have tried deer before and I did not like it at all. I think I won't be doing as much deer hunting as I planned on. I think I will only go as long as for sure I can give it away.

I thought the trophy hunters didn't eat the meat. I dunno. It does seem like a stupid question but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Thanks

What does that mean?
No worries. If you don't like deer meat, I question your taste buds. I had venison chops Sunday night and they were awesome! But your desire for a trophy is fine. One thing:
PLEASE make sure you find somebody to take the meat. Big game hunters go to Africa and shoot all kinds of things that they don't eat, but the way it works over there is the meat from the kills usually feeds a lot of people.
If you kill an animal and leave it to rot and only take the "trophy" parts, you are scum.
If you hunt and make sure everything is put to good use, no problem.
;)

this post SMELLS like TROLL meat to me

Er..... even if you find someone to take the meat, are you still going hunting in the sunfire?

If you don't know about deer, then I would suggest you find someone to give you some, and try it. If you are not after the meat, then maybe you really shouldn't be hunting.

This is just my opinion. But maybe others, here, agree.

It is illegal in Ontario to waste any useable part of an animal you have killed.
If you are going deer hunting in a Sunfire you have no way to bring home the meat... so do you intend to break the law if you shoot a deer?

In my opinion you should not be hunting at all. If you dont know what do do with the meat, stay at home and you wont have to ask such a stupid question. I will give you a set of antlers so you can tell all your buddies you actually shot a deer. Stick to buying your meat from the local supermarket, hunters everywhere will benefit if you stay at home and lock the door and dont ever let yourself out.

Even if you reword your post you still sound like a total retard.

Yes even though this is a realy selfish stupid question your not at a loss there are many guys that do not enjoy deer meet, however :

Find a buddy or find a hunting partner you can go withthat will take it.
or Call JOHN Y CANNUCK.
You can de-bone a deer and pack it out ina 1/2 hr to 1hr and you are only dealing with under 100lbs of meat and 2 back packs of meat!
I would not think your intent would be to waste it (I HOPE), I do not take your post this way. I see it as a un thought out hunting process that should not be hard to fiugure out, Take it to a bucher get it packed you owe the animal this much and in good faith you will find someone in need of it.
It is perfectly fine to give some needy family the deer meet, but don't assume you can just hand over a unskinned field dressed deer.
Until you can figure this small detail out don't ever take an animals life.
This is my opinion.

Do you think I really care what internet people think of me? I can reregister under a new name get a new proxy and nobody would know who I am.

I am not saying I am going to throw the deer out or just leave it there. I am asking what I should do with this. If you rather me just leave it there not knowing because I am too shy to ask stupid questions then so be it.

Not everybody in the world likes everything you do. I don't like deer. Big deal. I also don't like seafood or pork. Am I the anti-christ now?

John Y Cannuck, That could be arragnged since I am about 30 minutes away from you.

joe-nwt, I do have a hitch and a trailer and I think a deer would be towable so I am not too worried about this as long as my little car can handle it.

Monty, I already said I will only go hunting if for sure I found somebody to take it. Believe me, I am not going to go and shoot a deer and leave it there.

Thanks all
