What if I am not a meat hunter? What do I do with the deer?

I personally know some fellows that like to go along on big group hunts up here. They buy tags, do their share of work & pay their way. When one of those gents shoot a moose, they only keep about 20lbs for their own use and the rest of the camp splits the rest. I hardly see anything wrong with that. Hey Cereal83, can you join a group that you could hunt with that would be glad to enjoy your harvest?

Do you think I really care what internet people think of me? I can reregister under a new name get a new proxy and nobody would know who I am.

I am not saying I am going to throw the deer out or just leave it there. I am asking what I should do with this. If you rather me just leave it there not knowing because I am too shy to ask stupid questions then so be it.

Not everybody in the world likes everything you do. I don't like deer. Big deal. I also don't like seafood or pork. Am I the anti-christ now?

John Y Cannuck, That could be arragnged since I am about 30 minutes away from you.

joe-nwt, I do have a hitch and a trailer and I think a deer would be towable so I am not too worried about this as long as my little car can handle it.

Monty, I already said I will only go hunting if for sure I found somebody to take it. Believe me, I am not going to go and shoot a deer and leave it there.

Thanks all

You should think about what you are saying... a hunter is someone who hunts for food or sport... hunting deer for heads or horns is neither.
Your erroneous assumption that you would be doing good by shooting a deer and giving the meat away is truly offensive to many hunters here.:(
Your Juvenile response to the arguments you solicited only reinforces the veracity of your detractors...

yup change your name and start over....:p

If you hunt on farm land try offering it to the farmer or farmers if you hunt on more than one farm. We always share our game with them, makes for a good relation.

oh my

sincerely man,

Nothing would prevent you from donating the meat from the deer you put you tag on. It is very illeagal ( not to mention plain wrong)to leave the headless carcass in the woods plus it gives more anti-hunt argument to the tree huggers!

Trophy hunters want the antlers yes, but would not disrespect their trophy by wasting the rest..

Hey! I drive a sunfire!

If I had to, I'd have the deer hanging out the sunroof as I chewed on it on the way home. :D

If you won't eat it... why shoot it?

When I go deer hunting it is more for the sport, I like to shoot big deer with big horns if possible. I don't hunt just to supply meat for my family, Superstore fills that bill.
I will still eat all the deer I kill. At first I was not crazy about deer but once you get into making sausage and Jerky it is mmmmexcellent:) Get a wildgame cookbook and sausasage/cured meats book and Im sure you will enjoy deer too.

Cheers!!

Not liking venison, well I could pass on that, but seafood and pork too? Yes you are the anti-christ! I have had venison I didn't like as well, but it was how it was cooked.

As far as hunting in a Sunfire, I also have one and I'm pretty sure with the back seat folded down and a tarp layed down, that I could get a deer in it no problem. Well other than the fact that my wife would kill me because its her car. My buddy hunts out of a Dodge spirit (the rear seat doesn't fold), he has brought a deer home in it. I hunt out of a fullsized pickup though and it sure is a lot easier to just drop the tailgate and slide them in.

I think that if you do not like or want the meat then dont hunt.Use a camera.
Deer are not out there to be killed for the fun or glory all though it is a nice feeling to down one.Myself I shoot no more than my family or hunting party can use. Please dont just shoot an animal just to kill it.Not cool, let it go free.
I shoot one Deer a year and that is enough what with other game to keep
my wife and I in meat.Enough said.

Why can't you bring deer home in a sunfire?

Step one:

TAKE A HUNTER TRAINING COURSE !!!!!!!!!!!

Step two:

REPEAT AS MANY TIMES AS NEEDED (or until you realize that we all hunt for the meat, just some people have lots of hats to hang up.thus the need for larger Racks)

excellent point Paul!

I used to hunt from my old chevette (way back when...). Did the job

Where there's a will there's a way. Lack the will... Stay in the rocking chair.

There are different reasons why peaple hunt. For me it is the KILL. I do all my own butchering and give most away to the needy.
Here in Alberta you can give away your deer to the food bank, Ther are stipulations though like it has to be processed by certain butchers that are inspected. I know of several peaple who just enjoy hunting , hiking the hills ,etc fill all there tags and donate it all away. Can you do this in Ontario as well?

Im not tremedously fond of deer, but have you tried deer jerky or deer sausage or deer pepperoni. Bloody delicious. Of course different recipes will yield different results.
Shooting a deer just so you can tell your friends that you shot the deer is plain wrong in my books. Theres a difference between hunting and killing. Now gophers are another story. A head mount shouldnt cost that much.

Wouldn't the anti's love this topic ! If you don't eat it don't kill it!
If you like moose, then hunt moose, but to kill something- just to kill it,That not a hunter!

 My interpretation of someone hunting for "sport" means they are just after the head and horns, or they just want to see something die, so Cereal is not the only one who should "think about what you are saying"

Cereal, I am rather ashamed and surprised  at the number of negative responses you are receiving from some rather established members on this board. Many of these same people talk about the need to recruit new hunters to the sport but jump all over you for asking, IMHO, a very valid question. Don't reregister or change your name, just ignore those people that would rather run you down than offer some suggestions to help you with your question.

With regard to the meat, when I read your posts I got the impression you would never waste the meat just to have the trophy and that you are trying to figure out how to deal with meat even before going out hunting, good for you for thinking ahead. I actually prefer moose over deer as well, which is why I only shoot one deer every few years and give away 50% of it. I would encourage you keep some meat and try differnt recipes, start with the tenderloins, you may learn to enjoy it.

I am sure a number of your hunting and non-hunting friends would take some meat if they know you are going to get a deer, however as someone else already said, you can't expect them to process it, thats your responsibility. Most of the people I give my deer too really like it already wrapped in brown paper. That being said, I have given away whole deer and moose (just field dressed, skinned and cleaned) to folks who just are not able to get out hunting that year (illness, age, or no registered guns) but are willing to process the meat themselves. I get the thrill of the hunt (sport hunting???) and know I am helping out someone who really appreciates my efforts and will enjoy the meat over the winter.

With regard to your vehicle, I have actually been on a hunt in a small car, a Topaz I believe, with a group of 4 guys. The 250lb doe fit nicely in the trunk over top of the spare tire, but I would use a tarp or plastic to help with the clean up. I actually do most of my hunting in a Honda CRV and I just bring along a few tarps and plastic (no trailer necessary). It is best to cool the animal before loading it up, otherwise things get a little steamed up, and warm meat and plastic don't go well together.

The other option would be to debone the deer onsite, especially if you have no place to hang or process a full dear at home . I would think a 250lb deer would be reduced to around a 150lb (???) of deboned meat which should easily fit in a Sunfire. Perhaps other CGN members who do this can help you out with this process, this is what they usually do in remote camps I believe.

All the best and let us know how you make out.:)

Hey, let's give him/her the benefit of the doubt. Sure you can put a deer in a Sunfire. Maybe the venison he had before was from a 10-year old rutting buck and it was poorly prepared - who'd really eat that? Just be aware a 'trophy' may have a harsher taste to it compared to a nice, fat, young doe. There's only so much garlic sausage and pepperoni you need, after all. Your best bet is to find an experienced hunter or guide. Yes, check for food banks who will take it, but arrange this beforehand as you may need to take it to a licensed butcher. But don't waste it, period. I can't think of anything as unethical or immoral as wasting a game animal.

Good point, I once got sick once after having a venison meal (the flu or food poisoning, I am not sure) and puked it up for the whole night and was down for 2 days. It took me a year before I could truly enjoy the smell and eating of a nice Moose or Venison steak. I would gag everytime I even smelled the meat cooking. Something psycological I guess but it was a real challenge.

Your point about having an experienced hunter or guide is a good one, my father and uncle taught me. I don't even know where someone would start to learn about hunting without a person to show them, except forums like this one.

Well I don't want the meat. I would like the antlers and maybe the head. I just don't want to shoot a dear and leave it there, thats not what I am saying or I am thinking of doing but I swear I saw a poll if people were meat hunters or Trophy hunters and a lot of them weren't for the meat so I was wondering what the people who are trophy hunters did with the deer.

Get a camera? No thank you. I will look into the charities and stuff like that and hopefully I can find a good solution.

This is only for deer. I will eat moose, duck and animals like that but I don't know about deer.

Thanks

I just seen this thread and I see there has been a lot of replys already but after reading just a few honestly I couldn't just sit here after reading this crap and not say anything.

People who trophy hunt STILL eat the meat but its not the primary goal. I think shooting an animal and giving the meat away because you don't want to eat the deer is just plain wrong.
If you don't intend on eating the deer then don't shoot it
If you want to hold out to shoot a big deer then go ahead but realize when its down its yours. That means the meat, horns everything. The meat is good to eat, we're not talking about RAT meat here.

Nothing pisses me off more then some jerk wasting the meat of an animal he has killed.
I've heard of guys backpacking 9 hours one way to do a elk hunt. Shoot an elk and take the horns, tenderloins and backstraps and leave the rest. If I ever catch someone doing this kind of bullS@#T he better not let me get my hands on him.
Before you go hunting you better ask yourself "Do I have the ability to process and take care of this animal in a time frame that will not endanger the meat". If the answer is no, then don't shoot or make time.

Making the statement thay you DON'T want the meat just the horns and the head is what gives hunters a bad name. I don't agree with this kind of hunting:mad:
