I know that it is based on a Lefauchaux pinfire...but what in heck is the calibre/cartridge?

I to this day have never seen that type of cartridge before...have you or anyone else ever seen anything like that bullet?

The cartridge is a 4mm. The cartridge was used in subcaliber adapters, indoor "parlour" target shooting guns.

Any specific idea as to what the cartridge is called...is it a rimfire, even though it doesnt actually have a notable rim; just a rear bulge?

It really is an odd looking cartridge. I noticed that Sellier and Bellot still makes Flobert 6mm. Do you think they or someone else still produces these cartridges.

I am still at odds with it's wierdness

It is an inside primed centre fire ctg developed in the 20s by RWS for short range indoor target practice. Usually used with a barrel insert for temporarily converting 9mm,38 etc. Official name "4mm Ubungsmunition M20".
