We are planning a hunting site and hope to begin development on it soon.
If you would like to make some specific suggestions about content that
you would like to see, please let me hear from you.
.

got this letter from someone working on the new MNR page regarding all hunting activities in Ontario.
As of now, we don't have nothing on their site to even indicate that hunters dwell in this Province. They are working on one, and I'd like to know (from the CGN crowd rather than OFAH) what should this page look like.

what kind on info would you want to see on the site?
please number your options, so I can count them.

I need all the info by the end of this weekend, so I promissed to return the CGN options.

my sugestion #1- and the only one I'm going to make - is to have a segment dedicated to new hunters.
Very hard to be a beginner in this sport even for born canadians, nevermind for the percentage of 150 000 new citizens (approx figure) that Canada is wellcoming every year.
Rarely are newcomers (hunters) finding peers in their community, and the language barrier sets back things even more......

lets have at it guys !

1. defintly talk with hunters before changeing regs
2.defintly an area dedicated to new hunters
3.an area that has better easier to read maps for hunters to d/l that shows crown land and its access points.
4.an annoucment of the reopening of the spring bear hunt

They need to poll hunters when they do EBR hearings and make changes to the hunting regs.... screw OFAH.

Bigredd, this is not "talk to y'all later ... you know who" bogus.

This would in no manner affect the regulations, but it will however contribute to the page the MNR want to put on their site. How I got in the position to believe this information will actually be used... is a long story.
Could be a nice begining of a comunication channel that eludes OFAH completely.

This is serious folks, please post your ideas.

The MNR needs PDF files for new applications for their outdoors card (as doing it by mail would avoid the $10 administration fee). Seriously, I've searched high and low on that website, and can't find it.

Hunting information eh? How about:

1 -some template "permission forms" for private land,
2 - a FAQ section (that covers things like "wasted game meat"),
3 an interactive map: like LIO, or using LIO (that shows public vs private land, road names (if the road has one), shooting restriction areas, hunting restriction areas, (HOW about a query tool-so you can hit a "drop down: eg: deer limit, then click on zone 13, and it gives you a summary)- they could use all the same tables as are in the regs book definitions, an "ask the C.O." section - where they get the faq.
4 - bulletins and/or updates (example: reminders of acceptable "orange" or clothing, or gun-cases)
5 - post the names and vehicle descriptions of prosecuted poachers! ####ers:eek:
6 - EBR/response centre (type your comments in...)
7 - online purchasing centre (for licensing)
8 - online reporting process (eg moose, deer, bear, turkeys...etc)
9 - post some of the products they've already produced (such as their commercials, recipes, videos, tech-notes...etc) gamecleaning tips and acceptable practices...
10 - The Ontario Hunting safety book
11 - legal hunting hours (that update themself, daily)
12 - suggested basic survival gear/ techniques
13 - reporting sheets for when you see a samsquwanch, caribou, or cougar

To make it "proto-type" they could ask you to login using your hunting license number-then they could track what you were using or not using...on a voluntary basis. This would allow them to loose the unwanton crap after a year, to reduce maintenance costs.

14 (choose sponsors carefully) I was offended to see how many sponsors they have for that crappy "regs book" they put out every year. like I need to see another advertisement for WALMART hunting crap ever again, let alone supported by the ontario Guv't:mad: but if they have to pay that way, then have at'r, but they could do it online (by links) for whatever companies pay-up. (For that matter, they could make it regionally specific: Perry's rod and gun (Sault Saint Marie) gets to have his web site shown for his zone if he pays up a few bucks, and D&R sporting goods Thunder Bay, etc., to show local suppliers)
whateva. anything would be progress from what it is now.

I have a few more ideas:

15 Myths and corrections (common myths hunters believe, and the truth behind them) for example: that C.O.'s can't do anything when they know you're drinking as you hunt

16 Percentage of crimes: for example, in thunder bay, I heard the most common infraction during moose (or even grouse season) was "firearms loaded in vehicle". It would be good to have a "corrections section" where you read ...:
"95% of infractions (by zone) result in a fine. The top 5 infractions cover 85% of the problems. They were 75% loaded firearms in vehicle, 10% poaching, 5% night hunting, 5% over bag limit, and 5% license problems."

17 Here's where your money goes. It would be interesting to see where the money goes. Transparency, transparency... (I'm skeptical the extra deer tag revenue in thunder bay district, for example, has paid for anything constructive) I know I paid for three tags, so I would hedge my bets the overall "tag income" has gone up. YET, I don't see any more C.O's, nor any "deer management", nor any "moose, or bear management" or grouse management... you see my point. Same goes for wolves and coyotes. (define the diffence between wildlife management and game management)

I know you don't have the answer for this :p eltorro:p , but I figured it might stir the pot:D

How is this site to be paid for? who will manage it? who will pay to maintain it? where will it be managed from? to service whom (southern turkey hunters, or northern residents)?
18 - There has to be an interactive component to the site (In my humble opinion) and transparency.

I get the impression (from the board and from the group I hunt with) that the mnr's decisions recently, with lack of consultation with the hunting public (not the OFAH or conservation authorities) have left hunters feeling pretty burnt, and as a result... not so constructive.

This is a great vehicle to fix it, but I'm not convinced the mnr takes us seriously, yet.
19 - Take hunters needs seriously!

20 - keep yer stick on the oice!
