What is .22HP?

I was recently looking at an old Marlin 1899 and noticed it was chambered for .22HP? I have never heard of this calibre. Is this ammo still available?

Can anyone provide any info on this calibre?

Normally the HP stands for 'hollow point', it would be my guess but I'm probably wrong.

Probably .22 High Power, popular in Europe where it's known as 5.6X52R. Sellier and Bellot as well as Norma make components\ammuniton IIRC.

.22 Hp Stands for .22 Savage High-Power also known as the .22 Savage Imp,The cartridge was designed as a deer and varmint cartridge, it uses a bullet that is .228 in diameter and with an extra thick jacket to improve performance on deer. It was used on nearly every sort of game imaginable including Lions,Tigers and Brown Bear. At the time of its introduction it was the fastest cartridge available.

Factory loads with 70gr jacketed@ 2624fps.

Back when men hunted with full stocks fixed with 1500 gr. bayonets attached. Sure you only get about 15fps with that big ole bayonet.... but I think it still would do a good job of skewering a cat. Course after you could use it to cut some rags to help clean your pants out after

.22 Hi-power is a 25/35 (or 30/30) necked down to .228".....bullets are hard to find and cast bullets may be your best bet.

Ben: Horn used to sell .228-9 bullets for the HP as late as 5yrs? ago, maybe they still do?

the .22HP is basically a .30-.30 win. case necked down to .22 cal. If you can't find ammo and you have a reloading press, you can get forming dies from r.c.b.s. and then fireform them in your chamber.

Higginson Powder still carries .228 caliber although most of the shipment was spoken for before it arrived. Also Norma loads .22 High-Power still.

I had decent results shooting .224 70gn Speers thru mine before I got .228s. You had to size part of the neck to hold the bullet but if your bore is very good sometimes they will shoot the smaller bullets.
