What is 30-30 good for?

It's good for two things...nothing and f*ck all.

Get rid of it. I'll tell ya what, give me your email and I'll do you a favor and throw ya a few bucks for the lumpy thing. Who in their right mind wants a gun built before 1964?

Welcome Haywood....

Nice first post, offering to help a guy out like that!

You'll fit in perfectly with this twisted bunch. If you really want to help out, you could take a bloated elephant seal carcass up to the Big Ugly One for me, and drop it on his front door!

This little 1800 pounder was shot with a single bullet from a 94 Win .30-30. Not bad for a useless gun eh :!: :!:

Ted I have a old photo with no known date on it with a grizz that we have all stared at that had to be close to 1600lbs or more , I purchased it at an auction just as a conversation peice :D , I beleive there was bears that big once upon a time but all since shot off , and now a second bear hitting the 1000lb scale was just shot in Houston BC a week ago on the same ranch in les than 3 years , that will make 4 inland Grizz I have seen now over that 1000 mark in 6 years and 1 of the was almost 1200

and yes I beleive a 30-30 killed it, there a deadly little rifle at the right ranges :D

Rob, I'm not questioning that grizzzlies get that big. I have seen some truly monstrous bears and I know you have seen plenty of them, too.

However, take a good look at the photo. The paws are supposed to be 17 1/2". That means the boards they are resting on must be at least half again as wide, or about 25 inches! You can really see it on the left paw. Somehow, I really don't think they are 2X24 boards they are resting on.

Either way, it is a great bear, and one that I would rather have my 375 along if there was a fight brewing............... but, like you, wouldn't give up just because I was toting a 30-30.

Ted

I agree there but what exactly did they measure ? , why I love the picture I have its a tottal conversation peice and the rifles are still a mystery as there not that clear in the photo , but is the 17.5 the length of the front or back , does it include claws or not , hypatheticaly I would guestimate a 17.5 long paw would be at least 10" wide therefore a 1x12 would hold it , I did have a picture a while back of just a track in the mud it was 15" long and 8" wide , problem here realy is that you cannot see the entire hunter and there is nothing else to judge size by in the photo , its always fun to geustimate bears in old photos , but sadly yes a 30-30 would not have been my first choice either

was thinking 577 T-Rex or 700Nitro

oh I would use my bow on him.............dukes of hazzard style with a 6" stick of dynomite ductaped to the arrow   , although I am working up my nerve to wanting to shoot bullcoons 50 sharps lightweight

C'mon, Bone, let's have a look at that pic!

....not that I'm going to rush out for a Grizz when I get my 30-30 mind you!

I'd have a go at anything smaller though.

As far as I can find out 17 1/2 inches was the length of the rear paw. The bear was weighed on an elevator scale so the weight should be accurate. This bear was shot at a bush camp west of Hinton Alta. I also had a pic recently of a Grizzly shot by a conservation officer with a 7MM Rem Mag semi auto weighed 1600 pounds. I will try to find it again and post it.

Well, if it was weighed on scales, then 1600 it must be!

Whewee, I don't know if I would even feel comfortable with my 375.

Uh, Bones, where did you put the T-Rex?

Ted

Heres pics as sent by a neighbor 1600 pounder

The following pictures are of a guy who works for the forest service in Alaska. He was out deer hunting. A large world record Griz charged him from about 50 yards away.

The guy unloaded a 7mm Mag Semi-auto into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The thing was still alive so he reloaded and capped it in the head. It was over one thousand six hundred pounds, 12'6" high at the shoulder.

It's a world record. The bear had killed a couple of other people. Of course, the game department did not let him keep it.

Think about it. This thing on it's hind legs could walk up to the average single story house and could look on the roof at eye level.

pupzit , the bear was not charging anyone nor was the shooter a forest ranger, he was actualy a military pilot and was on a hunting trip for kodiak bear, it was shot with a 338 win mag and to anyone knowing it never attacked or killed a human that was all BS some dipstick smeared all over the internet a couple years ago , and from the bullet hole in the skull as I recall it is NOT a scorable trophy anyhow , and if you look at the pics of the half eaten leg that have been asociated with that bear the background foliage is from down south like florida

here is a photo of the photo (I am not taking the pic apart to scan it  )
