So I want to get my 1st revolver and why not buy the .500 S&W.

My question which is a better one to buy Smith and Wesson or Magnum Research BFR? I thought someone said the Magnum Research is built better.

I remember someone talking about giving the gun a inspection before buying. Does it apply to these when buying new?

Thanks,

I would recommend the 460 s&w instead, its a smaller caliber but has a higher velocity and more bang in my opinion. Also ammo is almost half the price and it can shoot 454 as well.
Prob one of my fav revolvers i own.

Do yourself a favour and go with the 460 instead of the 500.
The 500 you will shoot a few times and then put it down because that is all you can shoot.
The 460 with 45 Colt in it you can shoot for days as the weight of the gun takes up most of the recoil then for some fun shoot some 454 or 460.
You still have a WTF was that gun when you want it to be but one you will actually shoot a lot more.

lol +1 for the "WTF was that gun" effect :)

I have a SW500 and contemplating getting an SVX also

I hope that is not your first pistol but hey, to each his own. Both brands build fairly average and perfectly functional guns. I would base the decision more on whether I wanted a single action or double action.

If you get the BFR;

I would suggest 45-70 Government caliber, instead of the .500 Magnum.

45-70 has been a hunting caliber for a VERY long time.

Factory ammo is widely available. You can buy everything from very light loads to wrist-breaker loads.
You can even buy black-powder loaded ammo for it.

And if you get into reloading; Brass and projectiles are much more readily available and cheaper than .500 S&W components.

My vote goes for the 460xvr, love mine. As has been said, you can shoot .45 colt and .454 Casull with it as well, which is handy. However, I tend to shoot the .460 as I love the big boom, the flames, and the concussion, it's a beautiful thing!

This will be my 1st revolver but not 1st pistol. I rather have double action.

And thanks for recommending the 460 but I just want the big dog 500. And price of ammo does not bug me. I want big.

I wouldn’t worry at all about getting the SW. lots of folks like them. i’ve been tempted by the 6.5” model myself.

I had the opportunity to shoot a 500 S&W and it’s quite the hand cannon. First shot is no probs but, man, it’s tough to not flinch after that. I didn’t shoot it much since I felt bad for the owner because each squeeze of the trigger =$6.

Fun pistol but imo, I wouldn’t shoot it much. It’s your money, get the 500.

I would opt for a 44 mag or 460. After shooting 44 mag, 357 feels like 22 mag.

I priced bullets. 500 way more expensive and less options. The 45-70 BFR would be hard to pass up. If money doesn't matter, buy both used and sell the one you don't like.

So would you say get the S&W? I like the look of it better.

Johnny Python I would not shoot it much I just want a hand cannon
For sure. If you want a double it will be just fine. Also FYI if you don’t reload, Fusion ammo is toned down if you want something a little calmer on occasion.

Sounds like you know what you want so why ask. Just go buy the big S&W and give us a thorough range report with good pics.

Best is to buy it used.
They show up all the time on the EE, in new condition, together with the 50 cal. Desert Eagle.

It seems their owners bring them to the range two or three times just to show off, then quickly lose interest.
This has everything to do with the fact that ammo is prohibitively expensive, and that they are unable to hit anything with them.

Tough choice....both are nice! Single action vs double action decision, which sounds like your prefer double. If it's a range toy the S&W....if you have an ATC the easy choice is 7.5" BFG.

Ironically; I've only ever seen these huge double-action revolvers fired in single-action mode.
