What is a cheap to shoot, non-restricted, semi-auto, centerfire?

I've come to terms with the fact that I love the black rifles. Yes, maybe I watched too many action movies as a kid... Anyway, buying guns is cheaper than extended therapy to deal with it, so here I am. :D

However, I need something inexpensive to shoot, as it's going to add up!
I've done some searching, but it seems like the only cheap (non rimfire) ammo is the surplus 7.62x39, which gives me the following modernish "battle rifle" options:
-CZ858
-Ruger Mini 30
-Robinson XCR (has a 7.62x39 model, right?)

Are there any other rifles in this category that shoot cheap ammo that I should be looking at? I'd consider pistol ammo calibers as well... kind of.
The price of the rifle itself is less important, as I don't mind investing in something that I'll own for the rest of my life. Preferably non-restricted, as I'd like to take it out to the bush/family land.

(note, I left the SKS off the list on purpose as I like the more modern looking rifle and would take the CZ858 over it)

Thanks for any suggestions!

PS. Nothing against rimfire, I have one. Just want a bigger caliber rifle that's cheapish to shoot as well. :)

ummm well if you can afford the pistol calibers you can afford .223 rifles which opens a whole new doggy door full of fun expensive rifles! :p

basically you have the swiss arms rifles, ar 180b, kel tec su16 coming soon, hk sl8, robinson xcr, and i think thats it for non-restricted

you didnt mention that you wanted a non-restricted, and if you can get a restricted you could get an ar rifle in 7.62x39 if you wanted im sure.

but these other guys may have better advice..

Go to the red rifle board for cheap ammo shooters , well i guess a Rob Arms XCR in 7,62x39 would be a cheap shooting non res black rifle .. buts as far as .223 rifles go the cheapest ammo you will find is 40 cents a round .. If you want to shoot cheap stick with rifles that shoot 7.62x39 surplus ammo and 22lr.. Just buy a CZ-858 you cant go wrong..

Take a look at the SKS-D Killer from moregunssupply.com, It has that modern look and is still cheap and alot of fun to shoot. You can do alot of cool stuff to a SKS and its cheap so you can buy even more ammo! I bought one last month and am really enjoying it.

what the hell thats not even a real sks-d!!! I would just buy an sks-d off of the EE.

I started out with an SKS, they are cheap and go bang everytime. Then I bought a CZ.858 and never shot the SKS again, then I got my resticted to buy a Glock then that led to the AR in which the SKS and CZ were sold. Its a progression thing. Just remember what Cleveland says in family guys something, something, darkside "listen man this is happening so just come to peace with it".

Sounds like the CZ858 is the hands down winner. the 7.62x39 ammo is still 1/2 the price of .223, which has kept me away from the other rifles such as the SL8 and Black Specials (which is probably a good thing as they ain't cheap... but so nice!)

Thanks!

(Going to think about the Sub2000 as well, after the 858)

the kel-tech sub 2000 and kel-tech su-16 are both reasonably priced and use inexpensive ammo.

an SL8 would work too, you can get those for less than a RA xrc generally if you shop around.

but not much will be the cost of a CZ-858 and the crates of surplus ammo cost wise

the .223 rem can be had fairly cheaply and you can occasionally find the bulk IVI stuff for even less, 9mm (for the sub 2000) is one of the cheaper calibers that exist.

for range use you often aren't allowed to use the surplus ammo so thats something to keep in mind.

If there was a source of cheap .223, I'd be all over an SL8. The cheapest I've seen is about $0.40rd, what price are you looking at for bulk IVI?

You can buy it at $0.40/rd to start. And then get into reloading and it will cost you about $0.24/rd If you really want a 223. But I still think the 858 is more fun.

to be honest i don't recall the price, i didn't buy it i just shot it with the guy who did :p

I'm not trying to say bulk .223 is as cheap as 7.62x39mm or even close, but it certainly falls into the realm of cheaper calibers. just trying to add some contrast to the thread since the CZ-858 seems to be getting all the attention.

i've personally been interested in the kel-tec stuff and the more i read on it the more i want one. particularly the sub 2000 a < 700 pistol caliber carbine you can play outside with really tickles me, and the SU-16 seems to be a good all arounder, and the RFB seems to be a nice medium/larger game hunting rifle but i will stop now i'm getting off topic :)

CZ858. If you're going to be shooting corrosive, and you do all your shooting at the range, it might be worth it to get the chrome-lined, 15.5" barrel one.
