What is a good 30-06?

If your looking for something that will not break the bank, Prophet River( CGN Dealer) is getting some more Marlin XL7's in 30-06 this coming week. They are inexpensive and have been getting great reviews. Do a search, there are a few threads on them. I ordered one in 30-06 myself.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am looking to spend in between $600-$1200. For the Ruger I looked and saw there was one called the Sporter and another called Standard, which is the one you would recommend?
And for the M1 Garand, where would I find one of those?

Roger that! I bought one of the first 30-06 XL7 from Profit River (Clay). Have put over 200 rounds of 165 and 180 gr.'s through it and it shoots great. Savage quality and accuracy, for Stevens price. I predict it is a temp. pricing to cut into Savage/Stevens market.

Clay is a great guy to deal with and they now have their own banner on top of this website.

WSS is wholesale supply. They have a mail order service and I beleive a catalogue. I personally use SIR (Cabela's) better service and usually things are in stock.

I use a Midland Parker Hale 30-06 and recoil is moderate. For less than $600, and the action cannot be beat . Deer, bear or moose...it takes them all.

I bought a bolt action SIG in 30-06 a few years back (was really in the market for a .308 though) Put a Bausch & Lomb scope on it. It is a tack driver. Bought it at Al Simmons in Hamilton. I think I paid $800 for the rifle and $250 for the scope. I also had a Ruger M77 but in .338 WinMag. also a great rifle and actually less felt recoil (because of weight and pad) than my .270 Remington Model 6 pump. If I were buying new again, I would have a hard time deciding between the SIG and Ruger in 30-06. (and I really miss my M77 but had to sell it to buy my BT99 for trap)

If a secondhand rifle is an option you're willing to entertain:

-Husqvarna 1600 Series or FN Mauser action
-Browning Safari Grade
-Pre-'64 Winchester Model 70
-Sako L61R finnbear

great choice on 30-06 I must say, although I do not yet own any in that caliber I like the fact that you can be in the middle of butt-f*ck nowhere town, walk into any retailer that sells ammunition and they WILL stock 30-06. I know there are other calibers like that, but 30-06 seems to be the MOST common caliber I see at small town supply stores.

30-30 probably has it beat, at least in the east.
