What is a good 30-06?

The most recent aution (Feb 27th 2009) saw 14 rifles in .30-06 go for $450 - $850, the list included some Rem 700's, Hussqvarna's, a couple Winchester Mod 70's, and a handfull of Steyr-Mannlicher's (one of which i got my hands on).
There were a few deals to be had, but it goes without saying that it is buyer beware. Go early and get a good look at the rifles before you bid!

A good 30.06 to me is a m700 BDL. From the store strait to the gun smith for glass bading even befor you shoot it. then go to the range and brake it in proberly. and you will a good 30.06.Not much can ever go wrong.

I have owned a lot of 30-06 rifles over the past 50 years or so. They included many varieties of Bolt actions, and one semi-auto. Even a Winchester Model 1895 in 30-06 passed through my hands years ago. None were unable to do what was asked of them. Even the old 740 Remington Semi accounted for 5 or 6 moose. But today, I lean towards the M700 Remington as a reliable, accurate and aesthetically pleasing rifle. While I am no lover of the BDL stocks, the "Classic" and CDL stocks have plenty of appeal. My present favorite 30-06 is a M77 SSDM that is accurate enough to satisfy my tastes and then some. [for a pure hunting rifle] You would have a hard time going wrong with many of the others already mentioned on this thread. What feels and looks good to you is what is important. If you want to go bolt,get one made in Scandinavia. Either a Husqvarna 1600,Tikka M65 or a Sako Finnbear. Anthony at Trade Ex has some nice Husqvarnas in carbine or rifle lenght,and a few Sakos. As for the Tikka,good luck. These rifles were all built to last a lifetime plus,and are some of the best ever built!

I sent for a picture request from Tradex for 2 weeks or more now and still have not received any pictures. At first I requested pics for 6 rifles and was told its too much work him so I narrowed it down to 3. Still no reply for any pics. Good luck with the Husqvarna

I am always amused at the title to this thread, "What is a good 30-06?"
Just a slight change of the same wors and we would have,
"What good is a 30-06?"
I think the thread would take a different line, in this case!
