What is a good hunting rifle for a first timer

My brother in law has one remington 870 and one sks. Thats it. Both completely unmolested from factory. He does goose hunting, coyote hunting, and white tail every year. Always gets something.

That is pretty sweet. I am actually kicking myself for not buying an sks a few years back before the prices went ridiculous, even more since last month when I had the chance to actually shoot one, they really are a lot of fun to shoot.

You'll be kicking yourself even harder when the price jumps again.

If OP is out there somewhere, I find huskvarna mausers to be the best bang for your buck. Unless you are accustomed those plastic pot metal wonder guns everyone is raving about.

Looking for information about hunting rifles. What is the best hunting rifle for first time hunters. Something that does not break the bank.

If you are sticking with budget; Ruger Americans are a solid budget choice.
If you want to spend more and probably never need another hunting rifle down the road, Tikka T3 series. Even as a diehard R700 fanboy/user, out of the box if you are interested in just hunting and no mods down the road, the T3 should be everything you'll ever want and/or need.

Spend a bit more and buy a CZ 557 in 308/30-06 or a 527 in 7.62x39. Forget about the entry level junk, which so many seem to buy. Don't support the race to the bottom. Tikka T3x is a good choice if you don't mind plastic.
