I'm new to rifles and scopes , I just bought a a semi .270 a would like suggestions for a reasonable scope that won't break the bank , but will get me say 200 - 300 yds. I reckon most of my shooting will be in the 100-200 yd range

Mostly flat land, hunting coyotes. Some day, deer !

Semi autos can rattle scopes apart rather quickly, so I'd stay away from the cheaper scopes. My BAR ate scopes until I put a Vari X 111 2.5-8 on it.
In the Leupold line anything from a 2-7 or 3-9 VX11, 1.75-6, 2.5-8, 3.5-10 VX111 or a fixed 4 will take care of the short range hunting duties you describe.

I've been super pleased with my nikon buckmaster 4-14x44. In favourable conditions you can see bullet holes at 200 yards.

I've taken it all the way out to 1000 yards with reasonable success.

That being said I have a Bushnell 4200 on the way.

If you don't want to break the bank take a look at Bushnell Legend 2-7x32 or 3-9x40. I have a few and have no regrets. The 2-7x32 I have both on a semi 308 and a 450 Marlin (heavy recoil) and have had zero problems, hard to beat for the price.

The best advice that I was given, a few decades ago, was- don't go cheap on the optics. The only time that I did go cheap, I had issues. I put a new Bushnell on my 10-22, and within a few trips to he range, the reticle spun sideways. Now every scope that I own is either Leupold or Bausch and Lomb. I've had no trouble with the old B+L's, which become available occassionally- usually at reasonable prices. Leupolds, which have better eye relief than most other scopes, are the best choice for heavier recoiling rifles.

A fixed 4x with multi coating from a reputable manufacturer would be fine as well. Often there is little time to adjust the power when hunting - I usually have variables set on lower powers anyway for the advantage that a larger field of view offers.

You may find a good deal on a clean used fixed 4x from Leupold or Zeiss ...I have in the past fwiw.

For a coyote calling gun it is nice to have a wider field of view for those that come in and surprise you. Depending on your budget and availability any of the following would be good choices:

Bushnell Elite 3200 - 2-7X32

Bushnell Elite 4200 - 1.5-6X36 (Used If You Can Find Them, Out of current production)

Bushnell Elite 6500 - 1.25-8X32 (Costly, but perfect for your application).

Regards,

Chizzy
