i want to buy a 1911 and need some opinions on some. i saw that the springfield had on called the G.I. it is around $700.00. is it worth it or it there something wrong with it for a springfield to be that cheap. i like the kimbers, but they are alot of money. that is, unless someone knows where i can get a good deal on one. thanks.

hmmm... good question. What is a good 1911?

well, I think from reading up on some and checking out cgn for a while i think a good 1911 based gun is:

Kimber
STI
S.A.
Colt

i shoot a plastic pistol (G35) though so I could be mistaken...

Cheers,

Alex

The Springfields are good value... if the G.I. is a little too 'plain Jane'...pick
up one of the slightly more expensive 'loaded' models and you'll enjoy much
better sights, and a little more 'bling'.
The Kimbers and STI's are more money, but you seem to get what you pay
for.
I own,or have owned, numerous models of all of these and no complaints.

I was checking a 1911 message board the other day and was surprised to see how highly regarded the Norincos seemed to be there considering their low cost compared to the competition.

Springfields are so cheap because they are largely made with Brazilian parts. It also seems that SA has laid off its quality control department because the build quality of their guns (with the exception of some high-end models) is legendary for its inconsistency and ranges from pretty good to abysmal.

I keep hearing good things about S&W 1911, which appears to be an increasingly popular choice (I read somewhere that it's the best selling 1911 in the States these days).

Nice 1911....

I bought a basic Springfield Mil-Spec (not the G.I.). I like the looks of it better than a lot of the newer 1911s with thier front cocking serrations.
About 200 rounds through her with no complaints.

I just installed a new flat mainspring housing and soft rubber grips.
Contact Ryan at Wolverine Supplies.

Para makes some nice ones, expensive if new, try for a used one (made in Canada) I have one and it is very good. Also, I was quite impressed with the new S&W 1911 that I tried out recently, they are quite new to the game in 1911 style pistols but I liked it, even though my friends did not.

This is a pet peve of mine the guy said "what's good for $700" not "what's good if you have $900,000,000.00 to blow" In answer to your question the GI .45 is great. I own one have put a couple hundred slugs throuh it with no complaints. it also groups well even with the crappy sights. The nice thing about a gun like that is if you want to customize it (and you will believe me) your not ripping out $500 worth of parts you don't want. The only people that I have heard complaining about this gun use cheap reloaded stuff which jams all the time then blame the gun.

If you are looking for a good 1911 that is not too expensive. I would suggest the Para SSP. This is a single action/ single stack 1911 and is pretty much fully loaded. Some of it's features are:
- Match grade barrel.
- Match grade trigger with overtravel screw.
- Novak style sights.
- Skeletonized commander style hammer.
- Stainless controls.
- Extended beavertail and safety.
- Cocobolo stocks.

I have one of these and I picked it up for $950 from Gunco, here in Ottawa. The gun comes with a lifetime warranty, it looks amazing and is alot of fun to shoot.

There are lots of great 1911's out there, but for the money I don't think you can beat the Para SSP or the LTC.

The LTC is the same as the SSP but with the commander style 4.25" barrel. They also have the LTC in full stainless which looks so good I may have to pick one up to keep the SSP company.

What do you guys think about a Norinco 1911 from Marstar (single stack), then investing in a few more mags, and deciding which parts need to be "replaced" as time goes on (and rounds go through the barrel ;))?

1911 Fun

I've owned 2 Norinco's and I loved them. Not a single problem.

Since then , I've got 2 Springfields, one in .45 and one in 9mm platform for my wife. I've been lucky and happy that both Springfields shoot dead on at 25 meters with their factory sights. I'm pleased with the quailty control and I find it very hard to part with these babies. :D

Sure, I'd love a Kimber or Para-Ord, but right now I'm still in love with these Springfields (for the money). So is my wife....

Go with what works for your budget, shooting game, tastes, desires, Movies that you watch... (Sin City or Blackhawk Down :D )

Life is good,
Barney
