I believe ya. Lotta people don't give the old Cooey much consideration or credit, especially the younger generation. But for what they were, they are pretty remarkable guns.
What is a respectable group size for .22LR @ 50m?

Yes, indeed. Most of those Cooeys had very good barrels.
Additionally, they were very inexpensive.
Only things that handicapped them were abominable triggers and a long striker fall.
I had a Model 75 that accounted for a lot of Ground Squirrels in it's heyday, and some at pretty long range!

Aiming for under 1/2" is a good starting point. The nice thing about it is you don't need a fancy setup to do it. The following was done at 50 yards with a Marlin 925 using a 3-9 scope and Blazer ammunition (trigger pull is about 2 1/2 lbs)... hardly a target set up.
I will go against the grain. A few years ago another nut and my self did some informal testing with his chrony. We fired 3 rifles, a CZ, a BRNO and a Savage. We fired the Federal bulk 525 stuff, some CCI target ammo and a few others as well. Our results? The CCI ammo had a spread of over 200 fps! The cheap Federal stuff? 20 fps.
Tikka, your rifle is fine, the ammo probably is too but by all means try different stuff. You need what we all need, more time shooting and less time worrying about 1/2 inch here or there. Nice rifle by the way.

Tight groups!
Good 22 Ammo could be reasonably consistent. Gold Medal, Eley and Remington Target are all competent target loads. Expect a slight variation from rife to rife. I have not had a chance to try Luapa or Wolf Match. Al Simmons in Hamilton usually has Gold Medals and Bass Pro usually carries Eley and Rem. Target.
However, in my limited experience, non-target CCI Mini Mags have consistantely grouped as good as the three above ammos at 50, 100 and even 200 Meters (I am not taking it back!). so rather than switching back and fort between HP and RN and adjusting the scope for different grains, I just stay with Mini Mags. American Eagle HP 38 grain is another reasonably good do-it-all round, next to Mini Mags. Mind you, I am not a very serious target shooter.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I just checked out the prices on ammo at targetshootingproducts.com. It appears that SK and Lapua are Lapua. Is this the case? They have SK Rifle Match and they have Standard Plus but both listed under Lapua. The SK is a bit more expensive.
Correct. Lapua amalgamated into a larger ammo conglomerate in the Eurozone some time ago. I believe the same guys who build RUAG products are one of the other top manufacturers in the crew. So Lapua as an entity still exists, but not independently anymore.

How to improve the groups - well, that's good question
Work on your position, NPA (natural point of aim), hold, trigger control and (the most important) - consistency.
Since you are shooting from the bench - I suppose you are jerking the trigger and/or have some aiming problems.
Federal Gold Medal - is quire reputable ammo, so at the "club level" it is not the issue.
BTW what is the velocity? It should be subsonic - 1080 fps.
Here's a couple of groups ( actually my best) I shot from a bench with front rest ,rear bag at 50 yds with my T/C R-55 Benchmark and SK Std + ammo.
I admit that this doesn't always happen..but when you do everything right in the right conditions..you get great groups but you have to work at it

The Federal Gold Medal box says the velocity is 1200fps. First thing I'm going to do is play with the accutrigger and see how much of a difference that makes by making the pull lighter. The trigger is at it's factory setting at the moment. Better ammo will be step 2. If I can't shoot better groups with better ammo then I know it's 100% a shooter problem. Hopefully it's a combo of shooting skills and ammo quality. Nice groups are very satisfying and that's what I'm after.
If your BV is like mine, it came at the lightest setting. It even said so in the manual. Try a different way to fire the rifle. Place your thumb on the rear of the trigger guard and press rearward in the trigger with your index finger. Don't hold onto the grip, let gravity hold the rifle on the bags.

When I had a Savage MKII BV with the old non-accutrigger it would shoot .5 all day long at 50 M with CCI standard. I imagine with the accutrigger it should do a little better. Never did try the lapua ammo.
ok, this is the problem:
This Federal Gold Medal with 1200 fps breaks sound speed before 50yds - it's 1075 fps there: http://www.federalpremium.com/products/details/rimfire.aspx?id=667 and this is a huge accuracy impact.
I mean you can perfectly use them on 20 yds, e.g. I did use Federal Champion Target (which is also supersonic) on 20yds, and havn't noticed difference with RWS Championship edition and mid-grade Lapua.
So get the ammo which doesn't cross sound barrier before hitting the target, (subsonic is better) and try again.
