What is a respectable group size for .22LR @ 50m?

ammo

IMO if you can shoot 1/2" consistantly with a low to mid range rifle at 50, you are doing well. Try every kind of ammo you can find in your rifle. The story that you need high end ammo to shoot good groups is a bit of a misnomer. Although better ammo makes a difference in the majority of rifles, I have several rifles that shoot cheap ammo like higher end ammo. Buy every kind you can find and shoot them all. You might be surprised by the results. I have a CZ American that shoots Remington subs like lasers, a rechambered and recrowned 10/22 that shoots Xperts very well too. I have several bricks of Wolf MT and it is as good as you hear, makes it hard to go back to cheaper stuff. For the cost, AE22 Federals are the best cheap ammo going, shoots very well in many rifles that I own. Just my .02.

Every barrel and rifle will shoot a particular type of ammunition better than others. My Remington Nylon 66 will shoot dime sized groups at 50 yards with Remington Thunderbolt. That stuff is extremely dirty though!

RUAG factory visit. Nice. Even nicer is the groups the R50 is capable of achieving. Netserk, what is used to test the ammunition? Is the rifle in a vice or a locked in barrel of some sort?

Barrel only, clamped in vice, electronic target and speed measuring device.
Linked to the computer with specialized program which shows a lot of info - current group size, dispersion, average, compared to previous tests, etc, etc..
Unfortunately they do not allow any pics, etc..

Here is the video Anschütz (they are much more democratic ;)) test range - where original groupings are produced.
General setup looks quite similar, the only difference - Anschütz is not need sophisticated analysis to find/match the ammo - so they shoot at the paper target whish is to be included with the rifle

the information the group of you guys have provided on this topic has helped incredibly. i'm currently sourcing info and checking out personal handling preferences on a new .22 LR for gophers; i'm sure you'd believe just how wide of range of product there is, and in turn makes it very hard to differentiate one bolt action plinkster from the next. all of this info has given me an idea of where the bar should be set for good, great, and superior. a sincere thank you to all that have provided input on a question i would have asked but was fortunate enough to find an existing thread on it.

cheers
