Hello all,

I’ve come across what I believe is a 1863 Springfield musket. There are no manufacturer markings on the rifle and I’ve been told it may be deactivated.

What would the rifle be worth as a wall hanger?
If it is in firing condition what would it be worth?

The pictures I have of the rifle are very poor quality.

1861 Springfield muzzle loading rifles I have seen in full length with 3 bands and working go for 500-900 dollars.
In the U.S. they are more collectable for Civil War collections and worth double that.
Not sure about what you have, lock, length, 58? Eaglehead or US on barrel etc.

As stated above Canada is not a great place for black powder firearms, we do not have the historical interest like the states and neither do we have early season black powder hunting times. From your photos it either looks to be a wall hanger or need restoration work, which really brings the market value down, more photos are needed. Just a note though be careful with restorations as what may look like bubba painted the rifle black was done during certain war times as a type of pre camo as the metal in the white gave the troops positions away.

I’ve been told that there are no markings distinguishable on the rifle other than the “1964” printed on the side of the receiver

I would think it would be worth $300 - $400 as a wall hanger and more if it is a shooter with a good bore. I would be surprised if it had been deactivated as opposed to a lock that didn't work or a mashed up nipple. What would bring the price down as a collectible Springfield is that I don't see any US markings on the lock. Also check the barrel at the breach end on the left side for an eagle head and P and V stamps

This is what a decent one looks like.
It is not mine --I tied to buy it some years ago.

I have no idea what a wall hanger of an American Civil War rifle musket in that condition would be worth in Canada.
I doubt very much.

The lack of any U.S. Springfield or ordinance stampings would suggest to me that this gun is a "Springfield copy", a "blockade runner" that the Confederate States imported from Europe.

The rifle in the OP's photos looks to be a '61, from the shape of the hammer. It looks pretty rough overall, with the lockplate having been really scrubbed.

I think that you are right--- the lock (without normal markings) may be from a Model 1861 U.S. percussion Rifle-Musket.
Notice the cleanout screw on the bolster. (red arrow)

To answer i think a good asking price would start near 300, mind you thats asking not getting . If i were looking i would not pay over 100 for a wall hanger there not for me. I just turned down a $125 58cal zouave in rough shape and i did not see any takers. I love black powder firearms but you have to remember most folks under 50 have no interest in muzzle loaders, and i can find plenty in good shape for 300 ready to shoot.
