I know I way more anal than need be with precision reloading, and use Mitutoyo measuring tools. Maybe not the best but they work for me.

What are you reloading nutz using for measuring tools?

I have Mitutoyo as well.
Digital Vernier caliper, good to .001" or so
Digital Micrometer, good to .00001" [0-1"]
Both can be switched to metric if need be, of course.
The micrometer has revealed some interesting things!!

........Mitutoyo is pretty good.

people have compared it to much higher end ones and it's well within the limit if not the same readings.

For reloading, it's more than good enough, but don't kid yourself if you think they are on par for quality with Mitutoyo, Starret, Etalon, etc. ;)

I have a starret vernier, but love the dial on the Mitutoyo's. I never liked the digital much, am used to the older styles from school, even though that was longer ago than I want to admit, lol

I tried the mastercrap and after a week even with a new battery it would not function, instead of returning them I tossed the 30$ POS in the trash and considered it 30$ worth of experience...

how where the first machined calipers machined to such tolerances without the use of machined calipers?! chicken and the egg!

The first 'machined calipers' were not even vernier type. They were these

and they were set against a known size.

It might sound odd, but with crude tools, you can make less crude parts for machines that then make even less crude parts until you have very accurate and precise parts/tools.

Mitutoyo 6" digital caliper. I like to be able to go from Metric to Imperial with a push of a button. I do prefer dial calipers but did not want to have to keep both Imperial and Metric at my reloading bench.

I went with calipers but with the big dial gauge. If an idiot like me can learn to use them, then almost anyone can. If I can find time to reload, I sure as hell don't want to have to stop what I'm doing because a battery dies on me. Now if I can just find my calipers. :(
