What is going on? resizeing issue with PICS!

trying to resize some 30-06 brass last night, popped the RCBS die into the press and lubed up the first case and this is the result

The neck expander seems to be making a huge bulge only part way through the neck of the case, adjustment of the height of the expander/decapping pin didn't help anything, I've never had this happen before and the die resized the last lot of cases without issue.

any help appreciated!

yes I confirmed that, i also, though process of elimination, confirmed the expander/pin didn't get mixed up with another die.

yes i tried adding more lube to the inside, it seemed to help maybe a bit but im not sure, not every case did this every 2nd one or so
 
My guess is a lube issue if it's not happening consistently. Pull your die apart and clean the expander. I lube my case necks with dry graphite lube. I use a 35mm film canister full of #9 lead shot and graphite powder. I just stick the neck into the canister and pull it out. It's a lot less messy than using a petro based lube and no worries about contaminating powder with the lube. I stole this idea from another CGN poster years ago and swear by it.
 
Are the dies new to you? Have you ever used them before? Look's like they stamped the wrong number's when they were being made in China.
 
The brass I found buried in a pile of crap in the garage seems really hard somehow, not sure how I can tell it just seems/feels different for the whole resizing process, I'm going to try annealing a few and trying that, I'm also going to check all suggestions mentioned above, thank you, to the reloading room I go!

It looks like you're making 270's out of 30-06. Or 30-06 out of 35 whelen. All my 35 whelen brass says 30-06 on the head and if I was to make it 30-06 again it would look just like that.

Ditto. I'd grab a caliper and measure the case mouth of one you haven't sized yet to get a rough idea.

MYSTERY SOLVED!!!!!!

"Billdick" was right.... turns out the ones that were going really wonky had found their way through my 338-06 die at some point then back into a bag of bulk 30-06 range brass

I think a lot of this brass is brittle tho, I grabbed th torch and annealed 5 cases for a test and they went butter smooth compared to non annealed, plus annealed necks look so much more rugged and cool:cool:

I use Lee case sizing lube and apply it with a Q Tip inside the case mouths. Because it is a lube and semi-liquid it really decreases the effort needed to size the necks. The Lee stuff is lanolin based, not petro, so it won't harm the powder. However, because I'm a little anal about any residue inside the case mouths I just give the cases a quick bath and swish in some lacquer thinner. It immediately dissolves the lube and dries within a few minutes leaving the case mouths residue free.
