Hi all, hoping someone can help me id this 8mm Mauser rifle I bought from Trade-Ex a while back. It looks ugly but has lots of potential!!! Especially the new-looking bore.

I was trying to figure out which Timney trigger would work with it but it has become a bit complicated. The gun was simply identified on the receipt and website as "Husqvarna M-98 sporter".

I asked the tech folks at Brownells first...the trigger i looked at first was the Timney Sportsman.

"Will this trigger work? I have an M-98, on the barrel is marked
"Husqvarna Vapebfabriks AB, Kal 8mm", and has a crown and stylized "H" on the front receiver ring, along with "Sweden"...it is sporterized, has a 23.5-24 inch stepped barrel, stripper clip hump and guides on the rear rvcr ring, 3-lug bolt, floor plate with release in front of guard, 3 position military safety, and action screws with locking screws; action generally appears military overall. I found some info suggesting it may be a Husky 640 or 648, FN action in 8x57mm JS, made in about 1947."

"This will not work. I think you will need the 883-500-298. I am concerned about the safety aspect. I suggest you contact Timney at: https://www.timneytriggers.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=6&Itemid=5 They may have more information to help identify."

...The trigger he was referring to is the Timney Featherweight, for an FN Mauser. I think Husqvarna was importing FN actions and making sporters of them at the time (1947 if a website I found matching serial numbers to models was correct). The rifle does not say FN, or Made in Belgium, or have any other really obvious marks that would confirm that to me though. Maybe someone who knows proof marks and such would do better....also found some info that in 1947 there were changes made to the actions, such as not milling that thumb-notch in the left side of the receiver. So mine may have been made just before Husqvarna started modifying the receivers .

So, off to the Timney website and an email was sent off...got to be sure, right?...

"Husqvarna Mauser (Must use FD Model #301)It will Not fit the HVA action it has a round receiver and will not fit…."

...This means a more expensive trigger, that has a trigger blocking side safety. I wanted to keep the original safety...

The receiver is only round above the stock line, but has a square bottom like every other M-98 i know of...i only sent him pictures of the action in the stock, so i wonder if he is confusing the rifle i have with a Husky 1600/1640 or some similar model (made from 1953-1967)? But those have the safety on the side (explaining Timneys trigger choice), a handy floorplate release, as well as other obvious differences.

The more I dig, the more I think this is a simple FN military mauser, nothing fancy and any trigger for an FN Mauser will work.

Anyhow, my bets are on an FN Mauser, or early 640 or 648 husky...what do you think?

That really looks like a large ring 98. I suspect that a trigger for a military 98 would work.

I'm pretty sure not 100% that its just captured Mauser 98 of some kind that they sporterised, kind of like all the commercial lee enfeild sporters out there.

Yep, definitely a large ring, the front ring measures 1 3/8 inches in diameter; the guard screw spacing is 7 7/8 inches, which are your standard M98 measurements.
..but is there any "FN" in it at all? not sure what the differences are that make an FN what it is

The difference is, as with most 98 LR / SR standard length Mausers, fit & finish. That's about it, unless some gives it away - proof marks etc. it is hard to tell where it was mfg. / by whom. Some one may help you if you post a good pic(s). of the under side of the barrel and receiver to show all the marks. I believe there is a give away for Mausers by FN - be interesting to see the underside of yours.

I don't think you will go wrong by getting a replacement trigger for a 98 Military Mauser. --- John

It is just a standard M98 action and not the HVA action. I would suspect it is an early FN commercial M98 (basically a military pattern action). Are there any markings on the underside of the receiver? Any letters inside a box or such? Any proof marks on the bolt handle near the bolt body?

A standard Mauser 98 that someone has done a fairly decent job sporterizing. Any Timney trigger for an M98 will work. An FN action will have a second serial number stamped on the action flats behind the recoil lug.

Pity about the screw holes. A reblacking job and a new piece of wood and you'll have yourself a really nice rifle.

There are markings on the left side of the receiver, above the recoil lug...there is a P.V and 3 characters that are not letters or numbers. Behind the recoil lug on the flat is a box with a character I cant make out. On top of the bolt handle near the bolt is a rectangle with markings I can't distinguish (maybe part of it is that PV again), and on the underside of where the bolt handle meets the bolt itself is an A in a circle.

I tried to take pictures of this stuff but damn it it's impossible...

Another older model it might be is a model 146. I have seen pictures of so many variations of so many models of huskys that I cant decide on the most likely one.

...I have ordered a book on Mausers but its not here yet...obviously lol
