2 and half feet long with hex shaped breed. Chamber opening is in front of breech. The barrel is very skinny and chromed.

It certainly looks like a Quackenbush Model 1 or a variant of it. As tiriaq offers, it is an air rifle. Push barrel cocking, the .21 cal. smoothbore used round shot, felted slugs, or darts which were put in the loading port just forward of the octagonal area. These were first made beginning in the late 1870's and was nickel plated.
